I am shooting a project for a client in SD 24 fps. I might end up editing it on Avid XP (4.8.2 running on Mac).
Hence the 2 questions:
1. what should be the settings on the camera: 24p or 24pa?
2. what should be the workflow on the Avid: project 23.976 or 24?

I tested some 24p SD footage and in both project settings on Avid it becomes very jittery and some frames look interlaced. I did make sure to capture at frames ending on a multiple of 5 but that didn't seem to help. Before I spent the whole day testing all possible combinations, perhaps someone out there has a workflow already figured out. Pretty please...:-) and thanks.

Jiri - I didn't know you got a choice between 24P and 24PA on the HD100?

Anyway if you choose an NTSC 23.976 template that only supports advanced pulldown, so if you can shoot with advanced pulldown this should work.

I haven't shot or worked with this workflow but if you check over on the DVX100 forum I'm sure there are Avid guys there that have used this workflow.

John, this choice is available but only in SD. Thanks for your response, I will try it. Also, on Avid, you do have to set your in and out points to a multiple of 5, correct?

Shoot 24pa - the "a" stands for advanced pulldown which is a 2:3 3:2 pulldown vs. the standard pulldown of 2:3 2:3. It basically will give you smoother motion when you downconvert to SD 29.97. John is right and use the 23.976 project preset.

Yup- 24pa is the way to go. Just be sure not to let your camera operator(s) mix 24p and 24p'a' footage when shooting- it's a pain in the you-know-what to have to sort that out after the fact...
