I'm told by a dp I know that 720p HDV will serve me better than Sony 1080i. Why is that?

Also, in terms of lighting the green screen properly--is natural sunlight enough to get things lit properly? Please advise me.

It's better because of the progressive picture (non interlaced). As far as lighting, as long as the light is even on the background you'll be able to get a decent key by using > Chromakey>SpillKiller>MatteFeather. Those are Commotion filters (Primatte). Almost all keyers have similar FX.
