Say, you have set focus manually, and now you don't want to accidentally yank the ring and lose it.

You also don't want to switch to auto.

Either that, or switch to Shot Transition and set the focus as one of your parameters. Whilst in Shot Transition mode, none of the camera controls can be altered manually (neither does the Auto have any effect)
