sorry for posting this here on the XLH1 forum, but this annc just made me starting reconsider my cam decision.

It basically has everything I wanted to get for the XLH1 (35mm adapter, equal to HD-SDI recording solution with even superior codec, 7” widescreen LCD as viewfinder, normal VGA/DVI out for monitoring on a cheap big screen ...) and is under $20k

Time to open up a new forum I guess.

You can bet that DV-INFO will cover this at NAB.

Sounds interesting, but I don't see any kind of indication of what the camera will look like. That makes me wonder where they are in their development cycle, and when/how they'd be manufacturing a finished product...

They claim 10 f-stops of dynamic range, which they say is about 2000:1. Perhaps I'm confusing my terms again, b/c the 2000:1 ratio sounded really high to me. So I consulted John Jackman's lighting book and in it he talks about the 'contrast ratios' of the human eye to film and video. The human eye was supposed to be 1000:1, film 500:1 (probably closer to 250:1), and prosumer video around 64:1.
I always thought the contrast ratio and the dynamic range ratio were the same thing, so I'm a bit confused. Am I misunderstanding something, or did this new cam make a misprint? I seriously doubt this cam has twice the ability to distinguish b/t white and darkness as the human eye, so something is definitely wrong.

This is a guess, but I suspect that they are referring to it's ability to resolve detail across that range, but not necessarily linearily, similar to the knee in a film response curve. In other words, doubling the input level won't lead to doubling the output level at high level, but the two values won't both lead to peak white.

Similarly, they talk of it being more like a film negative, which itself may contain levels of detail that won't get passed on to the print, BUT which allows for substantial correction and adjustment.
