I picked up a new HVR-A1J (Japan model of the A1) for 208,000 JPY, which is 1,755 USD. (It has English labels & menus.)

From a reputable dealer, Tsukumo, at their video pro shop. I have their point card too, so got 9,000 JPY of points.

They've had this deal for a while now. They have the Z1J for 459,000 JPY or 3,873 USD.

Any other signs of price drops on the A1?

I'm curious.. does the japan model comes with full japanese menu only? Is English selectable?

Yes, it has Japanese, English and "Simplified English"

I know this isn't Area 51, but I expect that a successor to the A1, with a Clear-vid CMOS and a big improvement in its low-light capabilities, will be on their agenda before long.

Regarding "Simplified English" or just "Simple English", which has a 1,000-word vocabulary, the VOA has been transmitting shortwave radio programs in it for years. It doesn't actually sound any different than what most of my friends use, minus the vulgarities.

The FX1, at a regular shop, is 358,000 JPY, which is 3,031 USD. Typically you can get another 10%-15% off between store loyalty cards and taxback.

As far as I can tell, the pro-shop where I saw the steeply discounted A1 and Z1 only sells the pro model.

Wow thaz great. Lower price with English menu!! I understand they have models with international warranty as well but the price would make it unattractive..
