Hi to all of You!

Does anyone have experiences with both Fujinon lenses? The XS17 costs about 7.000 EUR and the HSS18x5.5 about 12.000 EUR in Germany. Both do not have an extender. Today a made some trial shots with the HSS18x5.5, but I do not know anyone who has a XS17x5.5.

Are there optical differences or is the only difference the zoom factor?

There are optical differences according to my local Fujinon tech. The HSs series lenses are the premium quality hand picked glass. The XS series OTOH, are not. He told me it's possible you can get an XS series lens that will be as good optically as the HSs series, but it would be a random luck of the draw. This is why the price of the HSs lenses are higher.

Hi everybody,

I am wondering if this workflow could work:

Filming HD 35MBits Footage

Capturing "DV" via Firewire Out (NOT FAM mode) - with ?!? Software

Editing SD - as you are used to...

IF the customer asks for HD - throw in the Discs and replace captured footage by HD files.

?
_______________

The idea behind is: At the moment most projects are SD. If shot in HD , the NLE spends quite some time converting to SD - so why not using the "old capture method" for directly working with correct DV files.

The question is if there is any software out there able to replace the DV captured files with the correc MXFs...

?

I know... this is very specific, but I am just curious..

You can do that. I have done it. However, recapturing the HD files to replace the SD might be a bit tricky. Depends on what software you use. But I pretty much capture everything in HD 35 cause I know I can come out the FW port in AV/C mode, even cropping to 4:3 in camera as it comes out if necessary. The only downside is that what comes out in this manner is DVCAM 25 4:1:1.

You're almost better off shooting in HD, import using FAM, then you can downconvert to SD using better codecs than DV25. That would also help maintain higher picture quality for an SD DVD output.

I read the manual and cannot find a way to display the Number of the clip being recorded on the field monitor.
I think it would be much easier to write down the clip number instead of the timecode to mark out the good takes.
It would also be easier for the editor to find the right material if we would give him Clip numbers instead of timecode as he accesses the camera via FAM mode and sees the clips as numbered files.
Anyone knows a trick that I haven't learned?

I think you are able to see the clip name on the camera LCD only not in the field monitor.

One thing I've noticed in the demo F350 that I'm using is vibration, especially through the tripod handle. It is actually severe and distracting. I can physically hear in from the camera as well. Is this normal? Makes me wonder if it will show in the pictures.

I notice it most when there are clips have been yet to be recorded(freshly formatted disk). Is it hunting for a clip? On my shoulder, I don't really notice it.

Depending on where the camera is writing on the disc, you occasionally can feel a bit of vibrations but these have never affected the picture.

I have noticed a bit of a flicker across the monitor screen,(sort of like a dropout) when playing back an edited(in camera) group of sub-clips out of the SD video out. It happens to the current clip playing when the camera begins loading the next clip into it's buffer(I can hear the disk assembly grunt as it gathers the next clip). Anyone seen anything like this?

It doesn't do it if I play from the main clip list, only the a sub-clip list and it mostly seems to occur on clips that are heavily trimmed. The camera I am using is a demo F350, and I doubt that it has the most recent firmware.

Is there a way that I can determine which version it is running?

I don't recall how to display the version on the earlier firmware, but if you pull up the clip menu from the thumbnail display, look for clip lock and clip delete functions. These are only present with the newer firmware (version 1.56 or later).

In fact, if you have the newer firmware, there will be a ROM Version menu page in the Maintenance menu.

Well, just thought I'd report on my experience... I just received my PDW-F70 deck, which will sit two rooms away from my edit bay (in the studio control room). I would rather not deal with sneaker net, so I decided to try something.

I purchased a Gefen firewire extender, which allows extending firewire over fibre.

I put the deck in FAM mode, connected everything up... and it works like a charm. I only transferred a couple of things so far, but works perfectly.

...just thought you would just like to know.

Thanks Mark. I was also thinking about bringing the camera online via firewire and marking it as a shared drive so that it would be visible to my network. If you are good at setting up VPN, this could possibly used for remote access to the files over the internet.

We've looked at all of the HD formats out there, and we keep coming back to XDCAM as the best fit for us. The work flow is outstanding, and potentially looks even better with FCP 6. XDCAM also allows us to physically put footage on a shelf, and that ability to easily archive is very important to us.

However, Sony kind of "muddied the water" this year at NAB by announcing their coming 2/3" camera line. I was told that the image block of the new camera will be the same as the high end HDW-F900 cameras. Also, the 50 Mb data rate sounds very enticing as well.

Most people on this forum seem to be very pleased with their XDCAM gear. I strongly suspect that the new camera will NOT be as feature rich as the F350. Sony got through NAB without going into a lot of detail about the specific "bells and whistles" on their new camera. But the raw specs....larger pickup chip, increased data rate, increased resolution, recording at 4:2:2 instead of 4:2:0, increased recording time on dual-layered media...sound really good.

What are the general thoughts....will the MPEG HD 422 cameras be worth the wait?

Steve Connor
April 30th, 2007, 11:14 AM
Don't forget they will probably cost a lot more too. I think the 2/3 inch camera sounds great, but the 1/2 inch cameras are incredibly good value and the PQ is excellent. It's accepted by a lot of broadcasters already and that is only going to increase as the HD changeover continues.

I agree about the workflow, having your disks on the shelf is a great comfort!

I posted a similar question on the general HDV section, but wanted to be a bit more specific with the XDCAM-HD users...

I've got a client that needs some HD footage shot of a controlled environment explosion. This is NOT for broadcast and does not need to be of that caliber. It does need to be usable though for trade shows etc... shown on an HD monitor.

The questions I have are as follows:

1) Will XDCAM HD be able to handle the brightness of the explosion better than 25 mB/sec HDV cameras?

2) What would be the best approach with XDCAM footage in getting 1/5 to 1/10 speed slow-mo. I assume high shutter speed, but what else? Software manipulation?

Thanks in advance for your input.

Stuart

Greg Boston

Answer to #1 is yes. Simply because you have a lot of manual control over the image and you have larger sensors with higher dynamic range than current HDV offerings.

Answer to #2. You can overcrank to 60P in camera, then playback at 24P which is 2.5x slower. To go down as far as 1/10 or 1/5, you'll have to do additional work with software.

when editing xdcam hd material on xpress pro without a mojo, does it playout a downconverted signal through the computer firewire port? in other words, what are the monitoring capabilities other than the composer monitors? with a mojo, do you get realtime downconversion to dv25 through Mojo's DV out? iam using a MCA a drenaline and am not sure what xpress pro abilities are in this.

I´m thinking of buying a new computer for my editing work. I love Apple machines but because of having worked on a PC (Avid) for many years now, I don´t quite know that much about the new Mac machines. I just know that they look really good and have great performance. Just read in an article that writeback was supported in 5.7 on pc and mac.

Hi to all,

I am wondering if the cam still plays it if the clips have been renamed by a computer (is that possible by FAM?).
(please dont ask why, its too difficult to explain ;-) )

I know that the proxies would have to be renamed in the same manner + ext.

Can the file names be changed?

Hi to all,

what programs support export to multichannel Audio MXF?

I want to render masses of HD MXF files (4ch audio) to SD MXF files (4 ch audio too).

Do Edius / FCP / whatever support this?

what about batch export (of a bunch of clips or regions)?

Thanks

Edius supports native handling of MXF files but i don't know / have no experience about your specific export requirements.

FCP has no generic MXF support. But you can try using something like Sony's XDCAM Transfer plugin. With that you can export a clip to a DV or IMX MXF file with 4 channels of discreet audio

Hi,

for different reasons it turns out that I want to shoot in HD but edit in SD.
Of course I want to use the final EDL for a HD Master as well.

At the moment, everybody is saying: "Work the other way around: Edit in HD and render your master to SD for DVD or SD Playout".
But thats exactly the way I DONT WANT to go.

I have complete SD Setup including Vegas, not using a dualcore (yet), so why should I suffer under bad (MPG HD) performance when I aim at SD Playout in the first step anyway? However, shooting SD is not the alternative, so I developed a workflow to shoot in HD and edit in SD.:

THE MOST SIMPLE way would be to import (FAM) all your files to a Vegas Timeline, render a huge SD AVI (DV) file and start editing - this way you loose any connection between the SD file and the MXF HD files.
A second way could be to use the DV OUT method on the cam itself, but here you´ll have no physical relation between the HD and SD files.

Both methods are unsufficient since you have to do all your editing in HD again...

What I aimed for was a second Clip folder with identically named SD files. If realized, you could close Vegas, rename the folder and force Vegas ("where are the files?" to look into the other folder, importing HD instead SD (or vice versa).

This was necessary to achieve it:
- batch render to MXF SD or AVI SD - with same length of clips
- finding a way to keep the original names of clips

I started experimenting.

The most difficult thing was to maintain the names of the clips.
Here is a solution:

There is a Script called "VEGAS LITTLE HELPER TOOL" (VLHT) offering batch rendering, film look, region/marker definitions etc. etc.
I found 2 functions that helped me with my project:

a) Generating regions over clips & rename regions to clip name
b) batch rendering regions using the region name for the rendered clip

Guess what? Import all your HD MXF files to a vegas timeline and run script a): Now you´ll find every clip with its own region , named after the clip (typicalley 0001_E002.mxf whatever)

Now run b) and render to any format you like using "batch rendering using regions & region names".
After rendering you will find a folder with all clips (0001_E002.XYZ) in your desired format.

For perfekt editing in Vegas the ideal SD format is (DV:) SD AVI (widescreen).
So when batch rendering simply choose this format.

The last difference between our HD and SD files is the extention. The XDCAM HD files have ".mxf" , our AVI files ".avi". If you try to rename the folder and Vegas asks for the folder of your clips, pointing to the other "twin" is difficult since Vegas differentiates between these two extentions and will ask you for each clip to point at seperately - thats too much work...

MXF is a container format, able to carry different formats inside. I simply tried to rename an AVI file into MXF and look what Vegas does with it.
GREAT!: Vegas uses the renamed files exactly the way like an AVI. I used this method for one week now , believe me: There was not ONE situation where I found a different behaviour between .AVI and the renamed .mxf file - Vegas knows that there is an AVI behind and simply uses it.

Here is the last step: Use any renaming tool to change all .AVI to .MXF - be sure to have the folder properly named (SD) to avoid confusions.

____HERE IS THE SHORT VERSION of the workflow:______

- import all (FAM) MXF HD files to a folder called "HD Clips" (or whatever)
(you can also use lowres proxies to start sorting and import the necessary clips in a 2nd step)
- bring all necessary clips into a Vegas timeline (be sure that all clips have different names!)
- use VEGAS LITTLE HELPER TOOL for: a) creating regions with clip names (takes 5 seconds)
- use VEGAS LITTLE HELPER TOOL for: b) batchrendering regions to SD AVI (DV AVI widescreen) using the region names for the rendered clips. Use a folder called "SD Clips"
(takes a while depending on the power of your computer and the number of clips)
- rename all ".avi" to ".mxf" (takes 5 seconds)

Start editing a project using your "SD CLIPS" folder - taking advantage of the fluid workflow of avi editing in Vegas , its fast & reliable.

If your done or you want to see your project in HD, simply save and exit Vegas , rename your "SD CLIP" folder to anything else and re-open the project. When it comes to the question "where are the clips?" simple point to the "HD CLIPS" folder - Vegas will open the "same files" without "knowing" that they changed from SD to HD. When you change your project settings to HD you are done and can see the same timeline playing in HD.

Going back to SD? Simple, just rename the HD CLIP folder again and force Vegas to ask where the clips are (dont forget to set the properties back).

PROs & CONs:

PRO:
+ render time (to SD) is moved to the BEGINNING of the project instead of waiting for a slow rendering in the end if your work
+ editing in SD is fast & reliable
+ any SD preview hardware can be used (DV out-> DA -> Monitor)
+ SD Projects are realized with faster render times when finished
+ preview render is fast

CONTRA:
- you need twice the space on your HD (though HD clips could be re-imported later)
- some resolutions formats must be manually changed (generated media, like text gerenators etc.) or manually set to 1440 x 1080 if you work under SD project settings
- when changing from SD to HD (or HD to SD) you must manually rename the folder and manually point to the other folder (dont use hundreds of clip folders for that!)

Again, I found it absolutely helpful to work in a real SD environment - compared to edit with lowres proxies you have a full sd preview, HQ Audio , its more easy to judge if you were on focus (ok, thats limited to SD, but simply switch to HD if necessary) and your customers will work with you without waiting for pre-renders or see videos with dropped frame rates due to processing power.

______________________________

Some more thoughts:

- Right now I am working on a music video where timing is extremly important. I neither could work only on lowres proxies nor with mxf HD files due to syncing audio to video , thats horrible if you have no fluent video. The SD workflow makes that easy (difficult enough... even in SD).

- there is one limitation: Sonys batch render scripts (even the one that comes with vegas) has a bug regarding multiple channel audio export. At the moment only a 2 track (stereo) audio export works with batch rendering. That means: If you really need your SD files to be 4 channels there is no way to render that (single "render as" works fine, but batch rendering does not).
Workaround: Divide the different channels to separate Outputs (busses) and render one or more long WAV files containing the separat channels and use them with your SD files. By grouping the whole bunch editing works fine.
Honestly said: I hope that Sony fixes that bug - then SD vs HD files would be ABSOLUTELY not different.
If anybody has an idea how to fix the script rg. multichannel rendering , please let me know! I can give some more background information on my experiences.

- when working with more than one XDCAM DISK be sure that the file names are different. In the worst case files should be renamed (loosing the option to erase the HD from your harddrive and reimporting them from DISK later).
Best is to shoot projects where the clips are steadily named thruover the disks - so no clip has the same name.

OK , thats it for today.

Uli, I would bypass all that lengthy workflow.

Just import the XDCAM HD footage into Vegas, but edit on an SD timeline/project settings. That way you won't take such a performance hit while editing the HD footage. This is how I edited my mountainboarding DVD. Then when I want to output an HD version I just switch the project settings to an HD configuration.

Granted, Vegas won't be quite as responsive as editing native SD footage, but if you are on a low powered computer it is still a decent solution, and allows you to use a decent XDCAM workflow instead of adding a load of extra steps to your workflow.

Been having trouble inserting edit lists into timeline. There are times, very few, that the edit list drops right in at the curser. More times than not two new tracks are created but no video and or audio. The clips, in the project media, show that they are being used in the timeline but do not appear.

Any suggestions?

Max

Proxy import cannot be disabled as of the current version (v1.1.0) of the XDCAM Transfer software on the Mac/FCP.

There is a new version of the software (version 2.0) that was announced at NAB and is expected to be released in September this year. This new version notes the ability to read proxies directly from disc, rather than caching (downloading) them to a local hard drive. (see the last part of the following info):

"... the following new features: clip rename and deletion, quick thumbnail load, metadata editing, connect multiple XDCAM devices via FAM, import with 'Disc Name + Clip Name', improve performance of partial HD clip import, cliplist preview and import partial HR clip, support for PDW-U1 bare drive. The transfer speeds are going to be faster too. This is because proxies are currently cached and are not accessed directly from the disc. With the new PDZK-P1 software the proxies will be accessed directly from disc so overall transfer/import times will be much quicker."

I'm about to commit to a XDCam (F350) camera and am trying to confirm the NLE configuration based on a MacPro (Quad or 8 Core) with a 23 or 30" Apple Cinema display as my primary display running the new Final Cut Studio 2.

I am primarily interested in shooting 1080/25p for indie feature projects and 1080/50i for documentary projects.

Seems the more I read the less clear things are given the multiplicity of formats and cards.

1. My major confusion is about monioring. On one hand I was thinking of using a second Apply 23" cineam display for monitoring with the obvious Matrox MXO. In addition I can use it as a portable HDCam mastering solution of a laptop when I travel to Europe (the studio is in Africa) as well as audio outputs to my monitor speakers. What I can't figure out , is if the MXO will support 1080/25p to the cinema display?

2. On the other hand I also wanted to get a 46" Sony Bravia LCD TV (full hd) like the KLV46X200A for clients to see the work. Here again the obvious choice would appear to be to go HDMI with something like the Blackmagic Intensity card, but it doesn't seem to support 1080/25p.

Is there any solution out there that would give me a HDI/SDI, DVI and HDMI outputs as well as support 1080/25p, or should I stick to 720/25p to make matters simpler?

I once read that the Blackmagic Multibridge Extreme had DVI but it nolonger seems to be on their site (Multibridge Pro and Eclipse don't seem to have DVI).

I know that there is the new AJA ioHD but that doesn't seem to have DVI, and it's very expensive.

thanks

I need to mix 24p footage with 60i footage shot with XDCAM HD. I need to edit them both in the same timeline and then export back to an XDCAM Disc.
I think the best way to do this would be to telecine the 24p footage (insert 3:2 pulldown to wrap the 24 frames into a 60i file). Then I could edit on a 60i timeline and then output to disc as 60i.
What software do I need to add pulldown to the mxf files? Vegas seems not to be able to do it.
After Effects seems to be able to do it (add pulldown to HD footage), but it doesn't support XDCAM HD mxf files (cannot read them or export to mxf) which forces me to go to another intermediate format.
Any thoughts? Suggestions?

try using Compressor to take the 24p to 60I there is some advance settings to do this, but you will not be able to use the MXF files directly you have to import and use the QT files from FCP

I currently am kitted up with a Canon XL2 and am looking to add HD capabilities. Steven House from these forums pointed the Sony out to me after I asked which cameras fit my wish list. It does seem to get me almost everything I want.

I obviously need a lens with the camera and was considering this Fuji:

and or the Canon AF lens , is it a VCL-719BXS? and where do I get one and at what price?

One of the things I have found to be a real problem is the servo focus controls and focus hunting during zoom on the XL2 lens so I want better than that. I understand that the Canon lens for the XDCAM-HD is going to do the same so that is why I am looking at the Fuji first. I also know that there are times when AF is just to handy or even necessary.

So is the Fuji a good choice for a manual lens, and is the Canon worth getting for its AF capabilities and where and how much?

What are the considerations for a person completely green with an XDCAM-HD? I use Vegas and have fairly fast computers.

How many batteries should I have, what accessories or add ons are "must haves"?

Would the SD capabilities of the F330 make having an XL2 redundant or are there reasons to hold on to the XL2 even with an F330? (would affect my budget)

And lastly, has anyone had any issues with their camera and if so how did they get treated by Sony?

or the Canon AF lens , is it a VCL-719BXS? and where do I get one and at what price? The Canon VCL-719BXS is the 19x zoom lens which is included with the F330K camera package, so if you want that lens, then you just order the F330K and it comes with the kit. If you don't want that lens, then you'll order the F330L kit which is the body only, no lens included, you order whatever lens you want for it separately from that kit. Buy from our DV Info Net site sponsors... several of them are XDCAM dealers: http://www.dvinfo.net/sponsors

So is the Fuji a good choice for a manual lens, and is the Canon worth getting for its AF capabilities and where and how much?See this thread: What Lens to buy for the F330? (http://www.dvinfo.net/conf/showthread.php?t=81418) (please search before posting).

How many batteries should I have, what accessories or add ons are "must haves"?Frequently asked -- please search the forum. The basic rule of thumb for batteries and recording media is three times more than what you think you'll need.

Would the SD capabilities of the F330 make having an XL2 redundant or are there reasons to hold on to the XL2 even with an F330? In my opinion, no reason to hang on to the XL2 if you switch to XDCAM HD. Greg Boston made that transition as well so I'm sure he'll have some input.

I have given a client instructions and links to download the PDZ-1 Proxy Browser and the and the XDCAM Viewer. He had to leave before I could install the MXF files on his Windows laptop. I told him I would send him a disc with the files copied onto it. I did a test by on a Windows XP computer in my office. While the viewer will play the files, there seems to be no way to get the PDZ-1 to play files that were just copied to the hard drive of the Windows computer. Is there a solution to this?

Thanks,
