Perhaps someone on this forum has seen Spike Lee's "Inside man".

There's a very interesting effect, which is used on "flashforward" scenes, on the bank hostages' interrogation room.

To me it looks as a black and white image with colors splashed in.

1) Does anyone know how they did it: shooting, post, both?

2) Is there any article on that shooting in American Cinematographer mag?

Chances are they just made it B&W in post then pulled the colours they wanted...

It all looks a little washed out, so I'm guessing, yes, lots of time in post playing with colours. But thats my opinion

It's a funny thing--just while I was watching it in the theater, those shots made me think of a tweaked preset in Magic Bullet.

To me, it looked mostly desaturated, with a golden colour cast and with a lot of diffusion (no idea if the diffusion was a lens filter or post). I thought the effect was slightly overdone, but it did look good. I agree with Ben; there's a Magic Bullet preset that's very close to this.

Although, Spike Lee is like most Hollywood directors and favours film over digital. And I'm only guessing, but chanses are this is film. I think magic bullet would be left out of the equasion. Most Directors like him would do thier best get as much of the effect in the camera through filters and add the rest once the film is unlocked.

But I'm only guessing here...

This month's American Cinematographer (April) arrived in the mail today, and the cover article is an in-depth look at the shooting of "Inside Man". Shot on Super 35mm, but with a Digital Intermediate (which would allow digital effects work). I haven't read it yet, but I have a long flight Thursday morning...

I believe those scenes were accomplished by cross processing and skip bleaching the negative (reversal more likely) - therefore a photochemical process.

Denzels shirt has the sun inside it.

But the look was probably finalized in the DI.

I actually just was screwing around with magic bullet the other day and came up with something which looks sort of similar, maybe a bit less grainy and a bit darker.

The message I am getting when trying to view the scene is that my QT version (6.5.2) is lacking some plug-in which is not available at the site. Can anyone tell me what might be happening or how to solve it?

It only worked for me in firefox - I think IE has a problem with that codec.
