I have no problem COPYING from P2 cards to Firewire or USB OTG drives. But can I CAPTURE from the camera directly (live) to an external firewire or USB drive without going through a computer first? I know Firestore and Cineporter are designed to do this. Can we do it with off the shelf drives or do they have to be SMART drives?
Thanks,
Rob

No, live capture can only be done with "smart" drive devices like the Firestore.

. . . or the Cineporter as you observed.
Firestore doesn't support 720pn; jury is out on the Cineporter

you can record direct to laptop (ie. your own external drive) via firewire. see my posting today:

not the most rugged system of course....firestore will soon be out with the fs-100. i dont know about it not shooting 720pn though.
