View Full Version : Omni or cardoid lav?

I'm getting a wireless lav right away and am wondering whether it's a better idea to go with an omni or cardoid mic.

For the time being, it will only be used for a single person reading news and throws to the camera. Locations will range from quiet indoors to noisy outside.

Eventually (aka when I can afford it), I'll have 2 mics for when we're interviewing one person. The interviewer and interviewee would each be wearing a lav, but until then, I'll be using a stick mic or shotgun.

So for my uses (single person talking in quiet and loud environments), would an omni or cardoid work better?

Here are the mics I am comparing:

I think you will have less headaches with an omni. The AT899 kit is very useful and has good sound. There are arguments for and against, but if I could only have one I'd go with omni for a lav.
