View Full Version : Slow motion concern

I was at the Video Forum in London yesterday, and got a demonstation of the slow motion capabilities of one of Sony's current Cinealta XD HD Cams (or whatever it's called). I recorded at 50P and played back on their XDCAM deck at 25P and was bitterly disappointed by the clarity of the slow motion. Sure, the slow motion was smooth but it was blurry where I thought it would be detailed.

Cranking the frame rate was not possible on this camera. And having seen the HVX yesterday, and spending a good half hour with it yesterday I can honestly say the difference in performance is not as big as the price (there is a difference, but worth over £20/£30k?!). Seriously, invest in some good filters for this Panny and take time to light on set and grade in post and you will have a very comparable image that joe public would not honestly notice the difference with.

Last year I used a Sony Betacam Slow Motion system that slowed down motion by 1/3, using multiple fields during recording to ensure playback is very smooth. The current slow motion we are used to on sports broadcasts are digital systems, barely improving on the motion of the analogue system, but ensure the signal is cleaner.

As the 60P fram rate capability of this camera is a major selling point for me has anyone got any tests of the HVX doing good slow mo? Thanks, Chris

I have a 15MB file of a heavy flowing river crashing on rocks @60P if anyone can host it. I don't have access to FTP, so I'll have to email it.

Sorry, Marc. The original MXF is almost 500MB. Won't quite fit through my email system;)
