I realize a lot of people are using magic bullet software or other plug ins to get their 60i video to 24p look. But I can not afford the software (presently) and do not wish to steal it either. What is the general way of doing by adding additional video layers, reducing opacity, deinterlacing etc? (I'm using adobe premiere elements 2.0, pretty identical to premiere pro as far as advanced controls.)

Can somebody give me a link to a good tutorial on how to do this or write a short one out here if you know the stuff well.

i just really need to learn the steps begining to end, whether it is better to deinterlace before or after etc.

Without more expensive software, you simply aren't going to be able to make the conversion.

If you can deinterlace out of Premiere Elements, then it will help, but then you'll have converted to something like 30p, not 24p. It will appear more film-like, but it won't have the motion characteristics of 24p. For some, that's enough. For others, not.

You can work on the other things which make video appear more film-like, though. You can saturate the colors a bit more, crush the blacks a little, increase contrast a little, crop to a theatrical aspect ratio . . .

You should also learn to light and frame theatrically, and move the camera cinematically.

You might search for VirtualDub and AVISynth.

Hey, kudos to that guy (update link) -- the results look pretty decent.

I take back some of the things I've said about freeware.
