This forum has a wide range of users in so many different areas of film and video production. And sometimes the "disadvantages" of the camera for feature production may not be worth mentioned for someone who would do news coverage, and thus biasing the purchase of an equipment for a feature or lack of feature that may not really matter in that specific activity.

What is your area and the main purpose of buying a HVX200? What are the major advantages and dissadvantages for your specific field?

Feature Film for DVD? Feature film for theatrical release? Television series (Sitcoms or dramas)? Soap Operas? Documentary? Corporate video? Sports? Medical? Legal? News gathering? Wedding and Event videography? Home enthusiast? Tv commercials? cd rom/internet?

AS FOR ME: I'm into TV commercials, Wedding and Event videography, Corporate Video and interviews.

FILM LOOK (24p and cinegamma)for: TV spots, weddings and corporate video.
DVCPRO 50 4:2:2 - TV commercials and corporate video.
MINI DV : wedding and event videography, and interviews.
DVCPROHD: future proofing the investment, the variable frame rates. Maybe for high end weddings when the cineporter is available, considering that the couple would love to see their video 20 years from now.
P2 workflow: It is not really important for me, but I have to deal with it anyway in order to take advantage of the DVCPRO50 / DVCPROHD feature.
NTSC DVCPRO25: Can anyone tell me why is it better/different than Mini DV?

I'm interested in the HVX200 because as a DP I want a creative tool I can own that can shoot documentary for both the big and small screen. What I've been waiting for is a camera that has a wide dynamic range, is progressive scan, shoots beautiful hi-def images on a robust format, lacks significant compression artifacts and can be integrated into a FCP workflow. I'm hoping the HVX200 is that camera.

I want to make movies.

NTSC DVCPRO25: Can anyone tell me why is it better/different than Mini DV?
On tape there are substantial differences in the tape. On the HVX, the only difference that I've been able to discover is that you can record four channels of 16-bit 48khz audio in DVCPRO25 mode, vs. two in DV mode.

In PAL there's a significant difference: 4:1:1 color sampling, vs. 4:2:0 for DV. But in NTSC on an HVX on the card, the only difference I've so far found would be the audio thing.

Intended uses for my HVX200:

1. Variable frame rate footage of live elements for reference and for inclusion into animation and visual effects.

2. Corporate video - streaming presentations, high res, low bandwidth. Lower rates like 18fps would be ideal for intranet corporate broadcasts and resolution of video would be more comparable to display capabilities and other graphics we include vs. video shot in DV.

3. Snowboard videos or just shooting stupid things that stupid people do that we may encounter on our routine ski/snowboard treks into the high country.
