Can anyone tell me if they have audio while capturing HDV? I'm running FCP5 and when I capture, there is nothing for audio. There is audio on the clip after you have captured though. When capturing DV, there is audio and many more options. Is this something thats for HDV only or is it my deck (using brhd50)

Thanks in advance,
Brian

https://support.apple.com/macbookpro15/batteryexchange/

Apple is offering free exchange of 15" Macbook Pro batteries that have model number A1175 and a 12-digit serial number that ends with U7SA, U7SB or U7SC.

The press release states that the current batteries do not pose a safety risk, but just that they don't meet the "high standards" set by Apple.

Hi, FCPeers!
How do I put HDV 24p and 30p footage together on the same project? I've got some stuff that I want to look like behind the scenes (24p) and some stuff that looks on camera (30p). How can I have them in the same project?
Thanks!

Hi,

When I export out of FCP using compressor, I heard that Compressor does not use any of the rendered content (color correction, crossfades ect.) but instead re-renders the timeline as it's feeding the frames to Compressor.

If this is true, why? wouldn't it save time if compressor just used the data from the rendered files? Should I just stop rendering since these files will never be used except for playback?

I am about to take the plunge and move from PC to MAC.

My camera is a Canon XL H1. I wish to edit my HDV material and archive it as HDV whilst outputting my projects in SD for the time being.
I have been liikung at a G5 with Quad cores, FCP Studio and a 1-2gb raid array.

My question is. What is the best method of getting my HDV footage into FCP and back out again? It appears that I can't just input my footage via firwire and pump it back to a recorder or the XL HD1.

Is there a site where I can find out more or, can anyone help?
Thanks
Ray.

howdy all,

I am considering the purchase of an alesis multimix 8 firewire <http://www.alesis.com/product.php?id=40> and would love to use it to capture 6 discreet channels of audio using fcp 5. I have been unable to obtain a response from alesis about this. From what I could find, the computer recognizes the multimix as a sound card. I know I can do this using dedicated audio editors, but I prefer to streamline the workfolw and do it all in fcp. Any input would be much appreciated.

cheers

Is there simple way of opening a premier timeline in final cut?

August 13th, 2006, 10:08 PM
In FCP 3, if I logged some clips for batch capture and decided to just capture the audio, I could click on the 'Tracks' column of that clip and change '1V, 2A' to '2A.'

But if I try the same thing in FCP 5, I get the message 'No shortcuts.' The only option is to re-log clips. Yuck!

Is there a way to change this, to activate 'shortcuts'?

thanks,
lmr

I never really though of this until last night, but I know Final Cut Express does not support 24p so if I were to take 60i footage and covert it to 24p using Magic Bullet in after effects...then I would not be able to bring it back into FCE. Is this correct?

Hello all, first post with (hopefully) a simple question for all you FCP users out there. Could somebody please confirm that FCP can output audio via firewire during editing HD footage. I'm currently using FCE, which cannot output audio via firewire during editing HD footage. This doesn't suit my needs, so I'm gonna go for Final Cut Studio, once I've received a definite answer to this, of course! I intend to use my MOTU 828 MkII to monitor the audio. Thanks, in advance, for your help.

Have anyone experienced (and perhaps know what to do with) last-frame-freeze?

I have a 1920x1080 timeline, MotionjpgA@75%. Suddenly i have some last-frame-freeze! Playback stops at last frame, and starts one or two clips later! Why is that? Someone know what to do? It's OK when exported to QT.

Hey mates,

This is my file: www.PumaTalk.com/spots/PumaTalk_Tennis.divx
It was edited all in FCP - but just having a hard time with the compression...

my issue is the following...

I use Sorenson Squeeze, to compress my clips...

I want to compress this small 30mb DIVX file to something smaller but still nice quality.... I tried to compress to MPG1 - MPG2 so I choose the CD format and put that video data rate @ 1000kps and it compresses to 47mb, but it looks too dark you cannot even see the tennis court or me playing tennis!!!! and I brought down the data rate to 500kps and still didnt' do anything but the file size was 27mb

Now Im tried compress @ cd MP4 and video rate 1000, so the file size is 24mb and less darker but still not 100% visible...

ahhh here is a screenshot of all 3 video clips...

www.pumatalk.com/spots/compression.png

from right to left

mpg4 = 24mb/1000kps video rate
mpg1 = 47mb/ 1000kps video rate
DIVX = 30mb

So the DIVX looks more clear then the others... just wondering if there is away i can still get that look...

Any other suggestions mates?
Many thanks for your reply mate,
Joey Dee

Hi,
I did a couple of recordings which have to be sync with a music track: We played a music track on a cd-player while recording. The actor is singing with this track. When i capture the takes there is a proportional sync difference (about 18 frames in 2 minutes).
I shot with a JVC HD100 in dv 50i mode. Captured it with another camera.

Is it possible there is a difference between these camera's or is it more likely the cd player is not the right speed?

I was tearing my hair out trying to downconvert HDV from a Sony A1U camera into Final Cut 5.1.1. It would control the playback and go through the motions of capturing, but nothing would be written to disk. HDV capture worked fine, but downconvert (which I hadn't used in a while, but worked in the past) would not work.

Finally updated to QT 7.1.2 and problem was solved.

The video plays fine in the log and capture window, but when I hit Capture Now (or try to batch capture), the clip preview is a freeze frame (as opposed to motion when it’s working properly) and only three seconds are imported, then I get the error message: encountered a problem reading the data on your source tape… It’s DVCPRO 50 footage from an AJ-SD93 to FCP via firewire. I’m using the Easy Setup “DVCPRO 50.” The mac is a dual 2 G5 and captures MiniDV from firewire fine. The deck and the these specific tapes run and can be captured by a PC based AVID system, but not by this mac. Spent two hours on phone with Apple and reinstalled and checked everything on the computer side and they swear it’s a problem with the deck. I’ve been through and through the decks menu and have varied all the options for 1394, and the input video button is set to 1394 as well. Anyone seen something like this/ have a suggestion?

Hey everybody,

I have a weird problem. I printed my project on tape and everything seemed fine. The audio levels were fine while printing and on the tape when I play it in the camera it was fine too. But when I went to the tv station the levels where not matched, anybody had this problem? Also in the project two time there is a little noise (like a wrong frame) in the images when I play it on a broadcast machine, which I can't see while playing it in my HVX. Anybody knows what went wrong? Thanks in advance!

Hello, I am having a very irritating and odd problem with Final Cut Pro 5. For some reason, when I hit cmd+Z or select the undo command from the Edit menu, it does not always undo the previous action. Sometimes it deletes clips and sometimes it throws other clips and edits out of sync. It is not consistent in any way and sometimes it even works normally. I trashed preferences twice and that did not work, does anyone know of a solution that doesn't include updating/re-installing the software? Thanks!

What would be the best software to do real-time encoding to an mpeg4 file format on a Mac? I'm not as familiar with Mac software. Here is my situation:
I have some medical classes that they want to record the video/audio from their lectures and have it available to download almost immediately after the classes are over. We are talking 6-8 hours of classes daily. I'm looking for easy to use software on a Mac, that ables the operator to pause the recording during breaks , if possible. We want to go with a smaller file size, so that's why mpeg4. Any suggestions would be helpful.

Thanks,

David

I have been given a disk of footage which is in the form of .mod files which i cannot playback or use in fcehd3.5 on my intel imac.
'
I have concluded from old posts on the forums here that i need a thing called 'Streamclip' to convert them so ive downloaded and installed that.

When i drag the .mod file onto Streamclip it gives a message saying i dont have the mpeg2 playback component installed.

Before paying $20 for it i just wanted to check if i'm going in the right direction with this?

Ultimately im just after getting this footage (sound and image) into a timeline on fcehd3.5 to edit along with fx1 footage which was shot 4:3sd.

Thanks.

Had some difficulty when trying to capture some footage the other day. Major problem with FCP Capture locating the time code for in points, followed by an error message that went something like, "can not capture because there is no video". Wrong! There was plenty of good video.

Anyway, I was in a hurry and didn't want to try and figure out the problem. Instead, I imported the footage into iMovie. When finished, I imported the iMovie project into FCP5.

Then, when I had selected the clips I wanted and moved them to the timeline, there were six identical audio tracks on the audio timeline. Deleting four cleaned up the timeline, but why six in the first place?

There were two cameras in use during the shoot. A Canon XL1s and a GL1. both were set to record in frame mode. Audio was, as always for me, 16 bit, 48k. Other than that, nothing special.

Any ideas as to what is going on?

I am trying to capture HDV 720/30p from my JVC HD CU-VH1 player through firewire. From easy set-up I sellect HDV 720/30 for capture, but FCP does not communicate with the player. It seems the only way I can capture the footage is if I sellect HDV Apple intermediate codec, and it still cannot control the player, I have to press play and then sellect capture.

Can someone please tell me what I am doing wrong? The footage was shot with the GY-HD100 in 720/30, and my FCP is up to date.

Thanks.

Final Cut Pro/GY-HD111E import problems?

Sorry for the cross post, I posted this in JVC area, but in hindsight this is probably a better place to post it.

Shooting in 720p/25p PAL HDV in the UK on JVC GY-HD111E camcorder I'm experiencing problems.

With a brand new Mac Pro and very latest Final Cut Studio complete with updates I'm having a little problem trying to import footage directly from a JVC GY-HD111E (yes I'm in PAL land, UK) via FireWire into FCP.

Footage is 720p/25p and timeline is set up in FCP that way.

I'm doing a 'capture now'. The first clip I'm trying to import is about 45 minutes long with no cuts/breaks whatsoever.

What happens is after about 60 seconds or so, it FCP automatically breaks the clip for no reason and starts a new one, trouble is, when it does this I lose about 4 seconds of footage at that point.

It continues to break clips randomly, sometimes after 40 seconds or so, sometimes after 95 seconds, but usually between 30 seconds and 2 minutes and each time it starts a new clip I lose between 1 and 6 seconds.

As I say, there are zero breaks or cuts in this clip, I have a 45 minute clip that was shot in one take, not even a pause anywhere.

Is this a JVC issue or a Final Cut issue?

It's a pain as it simply means I can't import my 9 hours of footage hence I can't get on with this project.

Any ideas why this phenomenon is happening?

Thanks guys.

Here is what I'm looking to do: I have a program I need to edit a portion out of in FCP. The problem is, having already ascertained where I needed compression markers, the timeline after this deleted chunk is littered with them. Now, once I connect up the remaining portions of my program the clips will all move back in the timeline, while the markers while stay at their assigned times on the timeline. Anyone know of a way to move clips and the markers above them all in one swoop keeping all the compression markers where they need to be?

One other question someone may have experience with; how much of a quality difference are we talking with the sequence settings for motion filtering quality rendering under the video processing tab? I believe it defaults to normal, but the "best" option is there as well as fastest (linear)...

Hi everyone, i'm new to the forum. I work at a production company that require a quick turn-around, so we record onto Sony dsr-du1 hard drive units.

Are old DU-1's work fine with final cut pro (both the latest updqated verion, and an older 4.5). However, we purchased a new DU1 from sony, set it up exactly the same, and final cut does not recognise it as a DU.

The DU can be accessed as a hard drive, and the files manually removed from each folder, but this is time consuming.

I rang Sony prime support about this, and after lengthly discussion, tracked it down to a firmware issue- new DU1's have a revised firmware, which they think might be the issue. They're expert solution- remove the files manually, one by one each time, or use the DU as a tape deck to play the video, and capture that way- both are unacceptable and are time consuming, defeating the point of using it. With the old DU1's, we could just plug in, click on import DU data, and 10 mins later all the clips are captured in final cut.

Has anyone else had this issue? And if so, is there a viable workaround to get final cut to capture all the clips?

Hi all. . .

I'm looking to hire an experienced FCP user in the KC area to help get me up and started on editing a few music videos. Pay is negotiable. I'm guessing we're probably talking about a few hours to start with and then just occasional (paid, of course) visits from that point forward. I live in Overland Park.

For reference, I'm using shooting with the Panasonic HVX-200 camera.

Please send emails to: never2latestudios@yahoo.com

Thanks so much!

i've got a project that i've edited in native HDV. i'm planning to send it to Magic Bullet at some point to de-interlace it. How should I prepare the file for magic bullet? I'm eventually going to convert the project to SD to be delivered on a mini-DV tape. Should I downconvert and then output a lossless file to MB? Or should I run MB first and then take that file into a DV sequence?

I am looking to put together a raid array that will be good enough to work with uncompressed HD in FCP.

Wondered if anyone here has put something together that was not a turnkey expensive solution.

Looking at some raid cards capable of 8 esata drives and an enclosure for 8 drives.

ANy suggestions?

I'm currently getting to grips with FCP for the first time (migrating from Prem Pro on the PC). So far so good - pretty quick learning curve (not that the manual is entirely helpful).
Working towards producing a short documentary project edited entirely on FCP (music created via Logic and Soundtrack) via a JVC HD100 cam and iMac 24", 2gb, 2.33ghz machine.
Aside from obviously making sure the footage is as pristine as I can achieve (same applies to the audio/soundtrack) I need the titles to be spot on also; I'll be using a fair bit of titles as the subject is a photographer and I'll be labelling each photo when shown in film. Further down the line I'd like to add subtitles to a short film I'll be making.
Unfortunately I don't have photoshop on the mac so I intend to use FCP's plug-in's and Live Type II which I'm hoping will do the trick.
Dropped a couple of titles into a short sequence and so far so good (nothing fancy at this stage...though 'fancy' can sometimes ruin work imo).
I then used the Boris plug in to add a title; slight issue in as much as what entered the sequence seems to have picked up fair amount of degredation i.e. blurred and almost 'pixellated'.
Any tips or ideas folks? I have tried the manual but it isn't so generous!
Many thanks.

I am excited-I assembled my project(shot 720p on jvc hd100) in imovieHD, because I was travelling. I thought" oh well, I'll use this as a rough cut and do REAL editing when I get back in FCP " Well ladies and gentlemen, I'll have you know that I took me little imovieHD project, handed it off to DVD studioPro and after about two hours a disc popped out that I (with some hesitation and nervousness) loaded into my brand spankin' new Toshiba HD DVD player and squeeled with glee when the "reading disc" message reported "HDDVD". It played beautifully! I AM KING OF THE WORLD!
Now on to my question-- When importing asset in DVDstudio the file came in as QuickTime movie from i movieHD. Would there be a better way to edit/or import? I am glad i have a hd disc, but is there something I am missing? Can I get better quality? Is there a better way? Should I edit in FCP to begin with, or could I do this imovie thing for quick projects and still have as good results as with FCP? Thanks to the man/men bold enough to tackle this.

Hi,
I'm trying to mix footage from a Canon XL H1 shot in HDV 25F (PAL)
with footage from a Canon XL2 shot in SD 16:9 25F (PAL).

I try to put them both in a 1080i50 or 1080p25 HDV timeline but have some troubles and may need some hints to operate as efficiently as possible in FCP 5.1.2.

A. Do I work correctly or is this more complicated and time consuming than required?
1. I make an HDV 1080i/50 sequence.
2. I put my XL2 SD clips there.
3. I select "Modify - Scale to sequence" to scale up the footage from 720x576 to 1440x1080 and then render. (Otherwise the footage will just occupy about 1/4 of the screen area.)
4. I select "File-Export-Using Compressor-HDV 1080i50 to change to a HDV file. I get a new .mov file.
5. Now I'm allowed to select both the native HDV and the new .mov and make "Multiclip" to edit with two different angles from the two cameras.
6. Was this as simple and fast as possible? How could I retain my induvidual clips instead of having one long sequence?

B. First I captured the HDV footage using the new 1080p25 capture. But then I couldn't select multiclip because FCP says it is impossible due to different codecs. The Compressor does not have a 1080p25 setting I need for for my SD material. Is there a workaround for this?

C. What difference is it to capture the 25F footage by selecting 1080p25 or 1080i50 for the 25F footage?

D. The idea is to obtain HDV material but output to DVD (SD) initially and save the HDV for the future. There is no demand in this case for more space consuming but better picture quality codecs.

Thankful for any hints from you with more knowledge out here! /Johan

Hi, I have finished editing a short movie in native hdv, pal, but before exporting I´d like to know if anybody has used the deinterlace filter in FCP...
It does a god job?
And what about the field dominance, if we select none it really does a 25 p?

thanks in advance

Does anyone know if FCP might evetually support M2T file import in future versions or revisions?
I know infomation gets leaked around and was wondering if anyone knew anything about support for raw video streams like M2T? It seems future HD cams like JVC's HD/HDD cam might go this route and it makes sense for future cams to record their native HD as M2T- if FCP could support it, it would mean transcoding to current HD presets (HDV, DVCPro HD) would be unneccesary.

Any info?

I've got my MacBook Pro 2.33 coming in a couple of days and was wondering if anyone could suggest a reasonably priced drive enclosure kit that would throughput 3 gigs per second. I'll be using seagate 7200.10 drives via sata 2 expresscard 34 slot = both run 3 gigs but I have not found a kit that will transfer at the same rate. 1.5 gig throughput kits are the only ones I've found so far. Hi guys. Is there any way to natively edit AVIs with the "Apple OpenDML JPEG" codec on the FCP 5.1 timeline? I have tried setting the timeline to M-JPEG A, M-JPEG B, and JPEG 2000 but upon playback in the timeline, the Canvas window says Unrendered. Thank you in advance.

Sorry people I think I should of posted my topic here so here it is:

Hi everyone,

I'm very new to the post production game and I am not the most technical person in the world, so please be nice (i'm stupid).

I am buying the new lower spec Mac book Pro with the 128mb graphics card but i'm upgrading the ram to 2gb. Unfortunalty I need to be moblie and I need a mac. I will be doing some basic editing using Z1(HDV or lower) and some standard DV on any camera I get my hands on. My question is, after buying a External Hard drive and Monitor, is their anything else I need to edit on the lastest version of FCP?

I've been told I need to consider the firewire connections of the camera. What do I need to Know?

I have also been told that Mac Book Pro has only one Firewire port. How do I connect an external firewire hard drive and a camera to a Laptop?

I am capturng straight from the camera, is this a problem?

Sorry for the long post but your help would be very well received.

I'm trying to figure out a way to automate a process where a Volume containing HDV files is duplicated by a volume containing the same folder structure and file names, but with DV files.

The flow I'm looking for is something like this.

1 Record HDV files to a Firestore.
2 Drag folder From Firestore to HDV volume on Mac Pro.
3 Using Compressor (?) duplicate files as DV on a "mirrored" volume.

HDV files will be added to the HDV volume daily, and the DV volume should update to match it automatically.

Is there a utility available to do this automatically, or can anyone recommend a combination of Applescripts, smart folders and Compressor, etc??

Thanks,

jpm

Well it happened. About 18 months ago I built a Final Cut Studio based editing suite with DV/HDV offline editing in mind ( with a small amount of online work ). Then we began getting busy.

Current Specs:
Decklink HD Pro PCIe
HDLink
30'' Cinema
23'' Cinema ( for preview )
Tannoy Studio Monitors for audio preview
All on a 2.3 ghz PowerPC w/4 gig of ram.
Promax - DV box 1tb raid (mirrored) FW800
Promax - DV box 250gig for tranfer between other studios.

What I would like to do.
Migrate the Decklink card over to a new dual 3.0gighz w/16gig of ram. Use the old machine for dubs/burning/aquisition. And dual mount the DVbox between both machines so I can work and burn at the same time. Am I thinking crazy thoughts or is this possible. Future purchases would be a fiber channel raid, but the Dvbox will have to work for now. The demand has changed for offline to online 10bit or higher.

Thoughts?

Is it correct to say that those of us who work in non-linear editing software other than Final Cut Pro do not experience any of the much discussed scene-break problems with the JVC HD-GY100UA?*

If so, can those of us who are waiting for Apple and JVC to solve this issue import (and export) using one of those other systems and then just drag the healthy video file over to FCP?

I’m sure it would not be difficult for any of us to find someone who uses one of those other, unaffected systems, who would be happy to help. But would it work? If so, that could be the easiest workaround imaginable, because once the footage is safely in FCP everything’s fine.

I just finished a Sports video project for a client and wish to set up for a more efficient process next year. The client gave me an excel file with the time code in/out and clip descriptions -a great time saver but it did take hours to key in the logs.

I am looking for an excel template to give the client to input the info so i can import an EDL and save my time keying.

Is this possible?

Thanks for your help.

Mark

Hi all,

I am not a FC user nor a Mac user. I just finished editing a video in Vegas and rendered the whole thing back to a m2t file.

My collaborator need this file. I've looked around and found that FC doesn't support that format.

Will idvd support it then?

Can I simply burn the m2t file to a dvd and he will drag and drop it in idvd?

Thanks

Phil
