Dean Sensui December 19th, 2005, 04:22 PM While we do the vast majority of our shooting out here in a nice sunny environment, we do find ourselves in adverse conditions once in a while. The problem we ran into in Alaska was that jackets do a wonderful job of totally muffling a lav mic. While it's easy to hide them under a t-shirt, burying them under a Polartec pullover and a rain slicker renders them next to useless. The mic I was using is a Countryman B6. I have small, hand-sewn felt covers to slip over them as windscreens. Not quite as good as a Wind Cat but cheaper and less obtrusive, and you can make them in different shades to blend with clothing. The Countryman lavs are very weather resistant. But if you get a droplet of water on the screen then the audio can get muffled. Better to seal them in the cut-off fingertip of a latex glove if water is a serious problem. The transmitter can be wrapped in plastic if necessary. We never had to, and we were using Lectrosonic 185's. The Sony transmitters we also use have water-resistant pouches that help protect against an occasional dunking. |
