HI ,
I urgently need to find out whether the player / recorder that goes with the Sony Z1 HDV camera can play footage shot in 720p from my JVC GY-101e?

Got a job leaving soon and the client wants to know if they are compatible....

Any ideas or know where to find out?

The HVR-M10U is a lightweight, compact HDV 1080i VTR capable of record and playback of HDV 1080i, DVCAM™, and DV (SP) on a mini DVCAM cassette, offering full backward compatibility to the standard definition DV world. In addition, the 1080i recorded image can also be downconverted to SD output mode directly from the VTR or camcorder in digital or analog. The HVR-M10U will also playback HDV 720p pre-recorded tapes offering complete HDV compatibility.

So 720P30 may be possible, but who knows about 720P24 or 25.

I found this on page 23 and 68 of the manual:

You can play back for HDV 720/30p format, while you cannot output the video signals from iLink HDV/DV jack.

This must mean that it is a no go for digitizing via the firewire port.
I did a search of the pdf for "720" and that's all they wrote.

Wow.....urgent responses thank you very very much.......

SO, as i am beginning to understand this, means that although the sony machine will play back the 720/30p tape it could not be captured to any edit program via firewire from the sony deck.....?!

Very disappointed if thats the case.....

It seems that you can't digitize footage from JVC on the Sony deck or the other way, and the same happens with the Canon camera. HDV is incompatible with itself.

so far the z1 seems to be what people (production houses) are asking for more often...... just cant see round the 1080i vs 720p difference...... that or they all have sony decks.

The Z1U has been around much longer than the HD100, so there is more market saturation. It also doesn't have many problems and it is supported by just about every NLE, so other than not getting true 24p and progressive scanning, it's a pretty solid format with solid hardware (the camera and the deck).

Here's the full list of compatibility:

The JVC equipment cannot play any footage from any other camera, at all. It only plays back JVC footage. It has no support of any kind for any 1080-anything. And the earlier JVC equipment (like the HD1, HD10, and CU1 deck) cannot display HD100 24P footage, although it will play the footage through firewire to allow digitizing.

The Sony equipment can play back Sony 1080/60i or Canon 1080/60i. There is no provision for compatibility with Canon 24F or Canon 30F. And there is partial/limited compatibility with JVC 30P footage -- the Sony deck can play the footage back to analog, but cannot be used to digitize JVC footage.

The Canon XLH1 can play back Sony 1080/60i. It has no compatibility whatsoever with JVC footage.

Bottom line is: if you want to work with JVC footage, you simply must have a JVC deck -- no other manufacturer's equipment will allow you to digitize JVC footage. If you want to work with Canon 24F or 30F, you simply must use the XLH1 to play that footage, as no other device can. If you want to work with Sony footage, you can use either Sony or Canon equipment.
