I made a five minute video of mostly interviews last week, and while the sound from my Rode Videomic wasn't BAD, it wasn't as clear as I would have liked. So I'm in the market for a good wired or wireless lapel mic for the GL2. I don't have a BeachTek adapter, but I'm willing to throw that into the equation if I must. Any ideas?

How far from the talent were you?

I was anywhere from four feet to six feet from the subject. Like I said, the audio was useable, but I definitely need a better setup.

While upgrading from the Rode Videomic may help, you'll probably get more improvment by getting the mic - any mic - closer to the talent than "4 to 6 feet." Try putting the Rode on a boom. Ideally it should be aimed directly at the speaker's mouth and positioned as close as you can get it without intruding into the shot, 18 inches or so if possible.

At work, I use a real inexpensive VHF Azden ($169?) that does the job just fine. Other good wirless set-ups we use are Samson Airline Micro's. ( about $269 each) Samson's are UHF too. So they may have less potential problems with interference. They will each do a decent job for you, and won't break you financially.

If you need to mic 2 to 3 at a time, get a simple Azden CAM 3 3 line mixer and amounting bracket and you're set. Just take some time ahead of your next shoot to get to "know" the mics and set levels.

The real factors are getting that mic located correctly. Clip the lav mic about 6" under the subject's chin, you should have no problems. No Beachtek required, just plug it into the mic input on the GL2. Results should be an improvement over the Videomic shotgun, because they will bew closer and not be picking up a lot of extraneous noise.
