Sony recently announced that they'll initially be using MPEG2 compression for their HD movies, supposedly because that's what most of their business partners are used to working with. It's also worth noting that using MPEG2 will result in larger files that are harder to copy illegally -- except the movie pirates will probably just crunch everything down to H.264 or Windows Media anyway.

The good news here is that blu-laser players will apparently be able to play full-quality HDV files, meaning we can now distribute in the same format we use for recording and editing. That'll simplify things if you ever need to re-edit an HD project from a disc copy.

I am glad it is not H.264. Unless you have a decoder chip specifically for it, H.264 is a CPU intensive bear to play. Most PC users are now looking to new video cards from ATI and nVidia with upcoming drivers for some relief.
