Digital video recorder maker TiVo Inc. on Monday said it will begin testing a feature to let subscribers transfer recorded television programming to Apple iPod digital music players or Sony's PlayStation portable devices

Leigh pointed out that although TiVo's new iPod pact does undercut the Disney-iPod deal, it also sends a broader message that should be heeded by networks and studios.

"It shows that the technology is here to make television programming available on a variety of different devices," he said. "There's no technical reason why that shouldn't be -- and there's no legal reason either, under the fair-use exemption."

With TiVo facing a freeze-out at the hands of some former partners, the plan may smack some as a desperation move.

A software purchase will be required to transfer the content from the PC to the iPod or PSP. As a security measure, TiVo will use digital watermarking technologies on programs transferred to a portable device using the TiVoToGo application. This technology will let TiVo track the account from which transferred content originates

Too bad they watermark your video with an additional watermark and your video would look super ugly at the bottom-right corner or worse, on your entire screen (extremely faded out) of your PSP/video iPod! I'll just look forward to a Blu-ray recorder to only transfer my HDV footage onto Blu-ray.

By "digital watermark" I assumed they were talking about invisible information in the file which could be used to track it and control access, and not one of those superimposed logos. But I suppose they might also do that...

Walt Disney Co.'s ESPN cable sports network is mulling a deal to distribute some television programs on Apple's iTunes music and video service, possibly joining its corporate cousin in a landmark deal, ESPN and ABC Sports president George Bodenheimer said on Monday.
