Yes, hairs were flying everywhere. It's one of those things that happens when you use high powered fans in order to increase sexy. Actually, that's a crack in the lense. We had to use a school-loaned Bolex and their lenses. Yes, that's the camera you're used to seeing from WW2. The one you wind up yourself.

We like to think DEUS EX MACHINA picks up where our combat cameramen left off.

Also make sure you save it with no upper or lower fields chosen, choose none. Always choose none for movies that will be viewed on a PC monitor.

That is save one file to be viewed on tv with no fields chosen, for tv with upper field. Or I guess sometimes lower field.

I would slow the camera movement down though. And use a tripod to pan if you want smoother movement, or a steady cam type gagget if you need to move freely.

You can convert lots of video file types to ipod files in itunes. Just right-click(Windows) or control-click(Mac) and an option to convert should pop up among choices.

I noticed the even/odd field stuff after I compressed it for the internet, the uncompressed version is much clearer.

Not really DV related, but I shot and used this trailer to raise about 500k for the feature film.

Filmed on super35 and telecined to hdcam, which was ingested into final cut pro as DVCPRO HD 1080i codec.

I did the final coloring and such in Final Cut, not the best way to do it, but heck - it served its purpose.

Also, not really that blood soaked considering the content of the feature film... WAY more violent, but I wanted the promo piece to be appropriate for mixed audiences.

Anyway, its an artifact now but I thought somebody might be interested.

Been pounding around these boards going on 5 years... man how time flys!

I wrote the screenplay myself, but had it worked over by some better writers. One of my key moments was realizing that some people are just better suited at certain task than others.

Anyway, I hope you all take the clip in the spirit it was posted. It's an artifact now, just one element among many that was used to raise funds an inch at a time.

Plus -- I enjoyed building the coffin.

Honestly, the feature film is going to be very very different.

I was using a Canon FD 50mm 1:1.4 lens, but not with the sony hdr-hc1 so I wouldn't know if the vignetting issue is the same. However, both cameras have the same filter size (37mm).

Also, note that it's the regular letus35 (not enhanced, or flip).

Hello, I have a DV camera and will be shooting some footage of a festival. I've been asked to edit the footage into a short 30 sec movie which will be shown on a broadcast news TV station. My question is, what format do most TV news stations prefer and what ever it is, can my DV movie be converted to that format so it can be shown on air?

60i 4:3 is what I send them. Most if not all local progamming via studio, live shot, or tape is done that way. The network primetime and sports stuff is all pretty much HD and 16:9.

For on air, you will either dub to a beta deck or they will have an adapter (DVCPRO deck cartridge) that your mini-dv tape will fit into.

Hello all, my work, a local T.V. news station for our area, is trying to use either a computer with controller software to stream video directly over a microwave system to our head end for broadcast. We have the microwave setup in place, but we are still deciding on what to do to stream our content directly. Our current setup are DVCAM decks with leightronix timers to control the units, but what we would like to do is stream directly from a computer directly into the microwave system. Any thoughts or ideas on software that will manage and control our programming? We were also looking at the Sony DSR-DR1000 as an option to dump our programming into. We'd like to network our computer to it and dump our video to it and let the timers do the rest. Is that a better option? Any feedback would be appreciated, thanks.

Lots of problems with this one. The exercise was to develop a three person dialogue, we got a randomly selected crew of first-year students.

I had a Director Of Photographer that can't speak English and direct gaffers properly, discountinuous sound capture from the sound recordists (and also the fact that were shooting on location at our school), and the DP's f*** resulting in the editing system's decks at the campus not being able to read the DV tape properly.

I had to take the tape home and edit on my system. Note that I'm not supposed to be the editor for this project, I just wanted to try scrap together something coherent from the mess because I know that the assigned editor, who also happens to barely ever show up for class, will ruin it even more.

Can't say I'm proud of it at all. It's not what's going to be marked though, the actual group editor is going to have to do that, and I can see it coming out a LOT worse than this.
The credit at the end is a bit of a joke I had to get my friend, Rees, to act at very short notice but I promised I'd make him a star...At least I tried

You can pretty much send them whatever you want. At my station we can convert ANYTHING so as long as you're not stuck in 94 and shooting SVHS you're fine. The actual frame settings don't matter much as with newer Adrenaline editors it will be coverted to whatever we need anyway. So shoot away.

Advice. Shaky hand help crazy zooms are no good. Find a shot and hold it. Find lots of them like that. Give yourself 5 seconds of a solid shot each time.

I just finished watching the second episode of a show we produce for our local market and have some concerns about our work flow. This is very serious as we are the first to shot and deliver HD content in our area. Even though no local content is broadcast as HD it's still put out over the cable to there HD subscribers. We have a lot of people looking at us to see how and where we could screw up and todays show presented some serious problems with the field order of the footage after down converting to SD.

We shoot with a Canon XLH1, capture and edit in the .AIC, then import a self contained movie into an Uncompressed 10 bit FCP project timeline, render it out letterboxed, then dub it to Beta SP. I tried using Compressor to down convert the HD master to 10 bit Uncompressed this episode (the second airing of the show) so that we could save render time in the FCP timeline. It worked wel but it seemed that the field order was reversed when I altered the Compressor preset. So we used Joe's Field Fixer to reverse the frame order and it looked normal and very nice after that. The standard Compressor preset, just left alone, looked like it was converted to 30p by default. I liked the look of it but my boss felt more secure with the interlaced footage after reversing the fields.

When it aired today it looked horrible! Wierd thing is, the commercial spots we put in looked fine. They were regular old Beta SP.

Following is part of a message I sent to the engineers at the station to get a little more insight into what we should be doing:

"We shoot the show in HD and then down convert it to SD. As you are aware, HD has a reversed field order than SD. We tried a different render process for the 2nd episode that aired this weekend which involved reversing the field order in post before we printed to tape. When watching the show on our studio monitor it looked like all was in order but when I saw it over the air, it appeared that the program footage field order was reversed. The commercial spots looked fine. They were standard SD Beta SP. The field reversal was not as noticeable when viewed on a standard SD TV but on an HD set it was exacerbated because of the up conversion.

Here's what I wonder:

- I'm wondering if you could give us some pointers on the best way to deliver the show. Tape? Digitally on disc?

- When a show is put into your system, in what codec is it broadcast over the air? MPEG2?

- My understanding is that MPEG2 field order is the opposite of DV and Uncompressed 10 bit."

If any of you guys could help out as well, I would GREATLY appreciate it, as it's My ass that's on the line for suggesting the workflow mentioned above.

Sounds like something funky happened in Compressor. I have never had to adjust anything but I am delivering DVCproHD masters that I then dub straight to BetaSP...or SD masters on D5s...

You must have a Kona card or similar if you go from DVCPRO HD to Beta. At this time we have only the AJA Io.

Since you use the Kona card I'd like to ask you a few questions. What camera are you shooting HD with? We're using H1, shooting 1080 60i. I'm ordering a Kona LH today. We cut on a dual 2 ghz G5 with PCI-X.

With the Kona there will be no need to capture via FW, is this correct? Will I need to still connect to FW if I want camera control from FCP 5?

Can you give me a little more detail on your work flow? Currently we capture via FW in the .aic.

We shoot a variety, mainly Varicam but also XLH, HVX, and a little JVC. In my case I have access to a DVCproHD deck and transfer everything to it before capturing thru the Kona, never have taken it direct from the camera. Most of the XLH footage was shot directly to the HD deck via HD-SDI... it looks STUNNING and SHARPER than the $100K+ Varicam (I still like the Vari look better though).
