View Full Version : Show Your Work 2006
Andy Graham August 17th, 2006, 05:58 PM hmm...
you started off like you had a plan with your question about what you would get if you crossed saddam hussein with the doctor then you kinda went off in a slant and gave us an evil santa instead which was unexpected.
If you're selling it then good on you!
my suggestion is write a short story like you would do in school but remember you are going to film it so don't put anything in it you don't have or can't get like f16 fighters or car crashes etc etc.
Then find places that look really nice like woodlands or if your in the city things that have good dynamics and are interesting to look at like fountains or landscaped gardens.
If you have a coherent story and some nice places then your on to a good start. Keep at it.
Andy.
BTW how come you have 131 posts but are still regular crew....i've never seen that before?
.
Jeff Cottrone August 18th, 2006, 05:12 AM Jeremy,
Nice work. The trailer is effective. Here's my impressions of what the story
might be:
--I really liked the beginning half of the trailer...the soft stuff about the
love story and following a dream. You got a blue collar guy with a musical gift, meets a girl, probably resists the girl b/c he's wounded from the past or something....all good stuff.
--The turn in tone worries me a little. This dude Sam from her past seems to transform the main source of conflict from being emotion based in real life dilemmas to being physically based via the threat of violence, which risks being phony for sake of having conflict in your story. It takes Good Will Hunting and transforms it into "a bad guy is gonna get me" movie. Two totally different genres in my opinion. Not that it can't be pulled off. I just think it's hard and hope you did it. (assuming I'm on the right track here. if not, ignore this.)
So it seems like the story is about being torn about following your dream, which is out of town, or sticking with the girl. I'm sure she has a reason she can't leave. And now he's got Sam trying to kill him. So he needs to resolve this bad dude situation and convince her to leave so they can go be musicians together.
At least, those are my impressions from your trailer.
Janssen Herr August 19th, 2006, 03:11 PM Thanks guys,
A new trailer will be up in a few weeks. So I will post details here when that one comes out.
Cheers,

Dave C. Preston August 19th, 2006, 04:59 PM I'll give it to you for getting your short film made, and it looks fairly professional, that's a major plus. On the other hand, I have some constructive criticisms, if you'll allow me to be blunt.
1) The joke goes on way too long. You had a good build up as she started to figure out what was going on, and the strangeness kept building up. When she discovered she was involved in some kind of satanic rite or rape, or whatever, the tension should have been cranked up in the music as well as the desperation of the character. The editing already seemed to reflect this, but she remained blasé about her situation.
2) Why would your main character even THINK of severing her OWN arm, when she could have clearly either killed or knocked unconscious either of her captors with all of those readily available tools? Your script and hero character needs to be much smarter or much dumber than that. If the main character is much dumber than the audience, then she should do something really dumb. Like maybe try to stab the guy crushing her arm, miss him, and accidentally stab her own arm... just a suggestion... but I'd rather have seen her attack and dismember the sleeping guy, if you're trying to rip-off the gratuitous gore of "Saw". If the whole point of the movie was to have a character cut their own limb off, you did it, but not in a very funny or believable way. It might help if you imagine yourself in their situation, then what might go wrong... repeatedly?
3) Finally... get the girl in your next movie... with a more refined concept or script. It will practically sell itself. ;)
Good luck!
K. Forman August 19th, 2006, 05:28 PM Obviously, you never heard the "coyote ugly" joke. That's where you wake up next to someone soooooo ugly, you would rather chew off your arm, than risk waking them. Long way to the punchline, but pretty inventive.
Joe Carney August 19th, 2006, 09:21 PM The song Halycon on and on is my favorite one from Orbital. Things get more focused as the trailer goes on. Just a little tightening up and it would be great.
Nice effort.
Nick Weeks August 19th, 2006, 10:44 PM Maybe some good voiceover too...
Rafael Lopes August 20th, 2006, 04:36 AM Here you go, guys. I shot this with a 70-200 f4.5. The footage is all very shaky because the fx1+brevis+70-200 is a freaking bazooka. It's extremely hard to pull focus, take care of the shutter, iris, nd filter, etc and hold this heavy artilary. Anyway, I think that the brevis works the best with day light. Too bad the Hd file was too heavy to post. Here is the SD version:
http://rapidshare.de/files/30079926/Brevis_day_light_SD.divx.html
P.S - No color correction. The only thing that was done on post was to rotate the footage.
Dennis Wood August 20th, 2006, 05:12 PM I posted over at dvx on this, but getting an f4.5 70-200 to work on the adapter with zoom is pretty cool. This must be a pretty sweet lens.
Dave C. Preston August 20th, 2006, 06:27 PM Obviously, you never heard the "coyote ugly" joke. That's where you wake up next to someone soooooo ugly, you would rather chew off your arm, than risk waking them. Long way to the punchline, but pretty inventive.
No, I never heard of that joke. Maybe the title of the piece should have been Coyote Ugly (or something else relevant).
John Harmon August 20th, 2006, 07:50 PM For those of you unfamiliar with this event, it's the ultimate classic/muscle car cruise-in. Taking place the third Saturday in August on the legendary Woodward Avenue in suburban Detroit, it's the only traffic jam you'll ever actually WANT to be in. The entire length of Woodward north of Detroit, nearly 20 miles, becomes a sea of classic cars & trucks (mostly American), hot rods, street machines, and people in "normal" cars checking out the action - it's the ultimate "run what you brung" event.
I usually shoot weddings, so I'm normally not able to attend, but I had this day off this year, so I brought the camera rig and started shooting. Check out this footage, a montage of burnouts and impromptu drag races at the north end of the cruise in Pontiac, Michigan. I made two versions - both are the same except the music track.
1) For us old f*rts, here it is with a classic rock soundtrack (Steve Miller - Living In The USA):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XTjSfhlVkuU
2) For the young 'uns (aw, heck, it's a great song for all ages!), here's the same thing with a modern rock soundtrack (Nickelback - Animals):
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pLIp5l4JLnk
It's going on a well-known auto enthusiast site (jalopnik.com) in the morning (8/21).
For those of you outside the U.S.: If you thought Americans might be a bit crazy, this video will remove all doubt.
Jeff Emery August 20th, 2006, 08:56 PM Gotta love that good ol' American V-8 horsepower!
I wish I could have brought my 87 IROC-Z28.
I used to live in the metro area but then never had a car to "cruise". Now I have one but live down in Ohio. Oh well, such is life. Thanks for posting the clip.
Jeff
John Harmon August 20th, 2006, 09:17 PM Jeff, a classic/muscle car is not required to enjoy the cruise. When I left, I decided to go ahead and take Woodward all the way home, and I did it in my 2005 Jeep Grand Cherokee. When I passed the area where I had been filming, kids were screaming at me to "light 'em up!" Yeah, right...I have a V6 and all wheel drive - the only thing I'm lighting up might be a cigarette.
Oh, Ohioans are welcome, y'know...
Rafael Lopes August 21st, 2006, 12:21 AM For comparison purposes here is a shot without the brevis in the same location: http://rapidshare.de/files/30152097/..._win9.wmv.html
When you look at the 2 videos it looks like they were shot with 2 totaly different cameras.
Jason Dirks August 21st, 2006, 07:16 PM Howdy,
Would love to get any feedback on the attached "infommercial."
Thanks.

Jeremy Hughes August 22nd, 2006, 10:33 AM Hey guys,
Thanks for looking at the trailer. I've gotten some good feedback over the past week on what impressions people are getting. I've got some good ideas for how to retool this rough into something better!
Quick overview of the story. The story at its heart is about making choices and unchecked aggression. We immediately setup the movie in the beginning with that tone. Jeff, you're comments are fairly close. And we do genre blend - but I think its effective. The writer-director did a great job of setting up the two sides. In the end, Ian has to make choices. Does he allow himself to be with Ally or does he let Sam, Ally's ex-boyfriend, get to him and ruin anything he could have a chance at having? There's pride issues here.
I think its setup in a realistic way as well and does some new things very well. When I get a new trailer cut, I'll post it online again.
Nick, we're currently just locking picture and moving into post - mainly sound and score but also the color correction and a couple sutble effects shots. Hopefully in a month or two.
Thanks everyone!
Jeremy Hughes August 22nd, 2006, 11:02 AM I cant get to the file - can you repost it?
Nathaniel McInnes August 23rd, 2006, 07:45 AM Hey people can you have a look at this short film i have just finished editing.
Can you please tell me how i can make this better etc
(PLEASE NOTE THAT THIS REQUIRES THE LATEST QUICKTIME PLAYER BECAUSE OF THE H.284 CODEC)

Geoffrey Engelbrecht August 23rd, 2006, 11:26 AM Hello Dino,
Finally got home and had a look at your film.
Not bad for a 48 hour film. I especially liked the choice of shots and atmosphere that they created. I also liked the twist at the end.
I didn't understand why the detectives knew there was a crime at that house. Actually when the two were being arrested I thought the police were there for another reason altogether and figured the story would take the tact of a misunderstanding between the police and the two guys.
However considering how long you had to put together the story, film and edit it I think you did a great job.
Cole McDonald August 23rd, 2006, 01:48 PM Hate to admit it being a died in the wool mac head, but the new game ad was damn funny. I, however, am a curiosity in the mac world as I manage a 300 node (all Macintosh) distributed network building and serving databases to the tune of $1Million+/Month with 99.999% uptime, so the "no good for work" thing never rings true for me in these arguments.
But the "no games" thing hurts real bad! Thanks for rubbing salt in the wound ;)
Meryem Ersoz August 23rd, 2006, 02:07 PM i'm a mac head, but i think these are cute....
the spoof i would really like to see is both computers doing their usual user-loyal back n forth and then both freezing and ultimately crashing simultaneously. now that would be truth in advertising!
Tim Borek August 24th, 2006, 07:56 AM From BottomLine's first release, Weapon of Choice. Pick a flavor.
QuickTime http://tjborekvideo.com/video/tBL/tBL_Classic.mov
Windows Media http://tjborekvideo.com/video/tBL/tBL_Classic_MED_wide.wmv
The driving scene looks much darker on a computer than on TV. Knock the Media Player Brightness control up to 10 or so for best results.
I wish we could have done more with the stage footage in the last third, different camera angles, but I couldn't get Nate to perform the song twice, and he was only budgeted for single-camera coverage. All in all, I'm pleased. The few test audiences I screened the video to grasped the concept. I don't think everyone will get it.
Thanks in advance for your feedback.
T.J.
Sheldon Blais August 24th, 2006, 01:40 PM It doesn't seem like there's a "concept". It looks like a performance driven video to me.
N-e-way, I like the video. I laughed when I saw the old man in the chair. The song is awful, and I didn't see the point of having the girl at the end. Overall, I thought the production was good....
Andy Graham August 24th, 2006, 04:33 PM I take it the concept is that the old man is him and he's remembering cause he's stood the test of time?
He doesn't look like he wants to be there infront of the camera, he looks very unanimated. I agree with Sheldon the song is awful, i'm more of a 'who' or 'Zeppelin' fan myself but hey that aint your fault.
The video was good you had some nice shots in there, keep it up.
Andy.
Lloyd Choi August 25th, 2006, 09:08 PM When you say he wouldn't perform the song twice... he refused to do it twice? Or because of some budget/logistical constraints you couldn't do it twice...?
If he refused to do it twice, that's f'ing retarded... shows his lack of enthusiasm for his music career, which shows in his boring performance in the video. And I agree, the song is awful.
I thought the video was well shot. Some better than others in certain areas. I understood the concept, but I think you could have gone more in detail with it.
Not too shabby for a first try. Keep shooting man!
Howard Bull August 26th, 2006, 07:51 AM Hi,
Forget the subject matter - take a look and let me have your opinion of the chromawork that I have done?
http://vids.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=vids.individual&videoid=1087275444
Thanks
Howard Bull August 26th, 2006, 08:50 AM Lets' split this into two parts........
The artist - not my cup of tea and perhaps another wannabe.......
The video - great! Well shot, well produced and a good solid production. My only (slight) criticism is that you should be a bit more 'rad' in your shots with a few strange camera angles etc.
Good though.
Douglas R. Bruce August 26th, 2006, 07:12 PM Here is link to some demo-reels that I have produced about the area I live in in Japan.
They were all shot in DVcam format and after editing with Pinnacle Liquid Edition 6.1 encoded for the web.
http://www.gaijin-eyes.com/ (ENTER the site, then click on "Movie Clips"
The second link is to a few demo-reels from a visit to my homeland - Scotland - this year.
They were shot in HD format with a Sony Z1, edited with LE6.1 then downconverted and encoded for the web.
http://www.gaijin-eyes.com/liquid/HDconvert/index.htm
I am always open to comments and suggestions - whether they are positive or negative.
However, negative comments are appreciated more if they are accompanied by some constructive suggestions to improve the work in question...... :-)
Riley Harmon August 26th, 2006, 10:09 PM Check it:

Frank Hool August 27th, 2006, 01:13 AM Riley, You guys have there ability to tell stories that sounds very touching. Very nice classical style doc.
Nathaniel McInnes August 27th, 2006, 05:23 AM my god. Amazing. (bit corny/cheesey, Well big time. But i love it.) How did you get the chroma so good. what camera did you use. I no you used flight sim because i go on it all the time but.
Just WOW
Nathaniel McInnes August 27th, 2006, 05:25 AM has any one had a look at this. If so could you please give me some comments.
Nathaniel McInnes August 27th, 2006, 03:26 PM Just a quick question. What is the name of that theme tune when the planes taking off and flying in the sky
Anthony Faust August 28th, 2006, 09:04 AM Hello everyone,
I'd like to share with you my new website. It's http://www.4312productions.com. I have pictures and videos of my latest projects.
For people in the D.C area, please contact me if you're interested in working with us. Actors especially!
Mike Horrigan August 29th, 2006, 12:30 PM This is my first post!
http://www.myspace.com/the_subject
There are 3 clips on the front page of the link provided above.
I'm still shooting but this will give you a glimpse of what I'm creating. I was going to call it "The Hit', but have since changed the title to "The Subject"
Please take a look and critique it for me.
Thanks,
Mike
Zach Schuyler August 29th, 2006, 02:12 PM I am currently 85% done with a feature film I have been shooting here in Louisville, KY. The website for the movie is here (http://theboxthemovie.com) .
Although the trailer is on the website, you can also view it
here (http://www.fangoria.com/news_article.php?id=2512).
We had nice write up in Fangoria that can be viewed here (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=it8ApBR_8nY) and just had our trailer accepted as an Official Selection in the Fright Night Film Fest (http://www.frightnightfilmfest.com).
We are fairly happy with how this is proceeding considering we are not quite done with the film yet.
Shaughan Flynn August 29th, 2006, 09:11 PM I like what I see. Some shots are a bit too dark for my taste. I presume that is the intent though. Will be nice to see the finished product!
Dave Ferdinand August 30th, 2006, 12:20 AM Looks pretty good, shame there's no voice over on the trailer. I think it would make it look much more 'professional' and also add a bit more info regarding the story.
Nicely done though.
Justin Tomchuk August 30th, 2006, 06:59 AM Mike, another great job on a short. I'm impressed again. I am glad you are taking the video outside, for me, when short videos start inside it seems very claustrophobic. Once you start building on you your video even more, I would tighten up the scenes though. They should not be so long. Some of the running cuts could be replaced with various shots of the winderness or woods. Cut to running, then cut to running then again loses attention of people.
Other than that, it looks pretty good. Nice job on the effects.
Justin
Mike Horrigan August 30th, 2006, 07:19 AM Hi Justin, not sure if you have me confused with someone else. This is my first short, I've attempted one other, but never got to finish it. I do have some indoor footage posted on another site, maybe that's what you are referring to. It's all part of the same "short" though.
I'm self-taught and running the entire show. Directing, lighting, editing, SFX, etc...
I'm learning as I go and I have a LOT to learn. :)
Justin Tomchuk August 30th, 2006, 08:27 AM Hey Mike. That was probably me rambling on because I just woke up. I just checked my post history and I saw another first video I commented on, which was not yours. Sorry for confusion, lol.
Justin
Mike Horrigan August 30th, 2006, 09:22 AM No problem, thanks for the comments.
Mike
Eli R Cantu August 30th, 2006, 04:29 PM I had a XLs for a very long time now and have done a few thing here and there. Its been dropped, frozen in New York, rained on in Japan, and super heated in Texas. With a broken lens assembly, viewfinder and a dodgy firewire port, its never been part of an actual production til now. Here is the trailer for my first movie.
I played the role of DP/Camera/Editor/Soud Design & executive producer.
With some ADR and alot of color correction to go. I wanted to give you guys an early first look of what we been doing for the past 4 months of pre, principle and post of production. This is really raw unalterd video straight from tha camera. No color correction has been applied since editing and sound scyncing has been the focus. Plus the bar part is being overdubbed cause of the loud ambience. With that said, please let me know what you guys think.

Justin Tomchuk August 30th, 2006, 07:43 PM Hey everyone. I put together my first demo reel for my website and anyone who asks for one. I need some input on ways to improve it, why you like what you don't. It's only 2 minutes long. The words are a little small, but that's just because it's only 320x240, it's meant for DVD.

Thanks,
Justin
Dave Perry August 30th, 2006, 07:56 PM I like the stop motion annimation and graphics. The people didn't make much sense to me though.
I also like Legos :)
Dave Perry August 30th, 2006, 07:58 PM I don't have a lot of my own footage. Most of my work has been done for my employer but everything in this demo was shot and edited by me. Let me know what y'all think.
http://www.daveperry.net/pages/demo_reel_072606.shtml
Justin Tomchuk August 30th, 2006, 08:15 PM Cool, full of colour. I like how it's well synced to the music. I like the ferris wheel shot the most.
Justin
Cole McDonald August 30th, 2006, 09:39 PM nice angles, fun style in your animation!
Eric Kome August 30th, 2006, 10:51 PM nice. good action. i too love that carnival ride shot - great lighting. i, personally, would drop that "...and strange" part at the end. the shot itself is way too long, and isn't doing anything to help the reel in my opinion. makes an otherwise professional-looking reel look less so. otherwise, looks good!
