Is it possible to upgrade only the processor in a G5?

Say someone has a dual-processor 2Gz Apple G5 loaded with everything, 500Gb HDD, 8Gb RAM, etc etc

Can they upgrade to Quad only by upgrading certain elements in their computer, like only the processors and motherboard, for example...

Keep all the cards, storage, drives, memory and so on, thus minimizing the upgrade cost.

I doubt it, but don't know for sure. Apple certainly doesn't offer any G5 upgrades. IMO upgrading Macs has never made any sense economically. When you factor in the cost of the upgrade board(s), possibly new RAM, etc. you'll be very hard pressed to come out ahead of selling your old machine and using the proceeds to buy a new model. Also consider that you'd be putting money into a machine that already has lots of mileage on it and is probably out of warranty. And third party upgrades often have issues with software.

I read somewhere[and I can't place it right now ,Maccentral? XLR8yourmac.com?] is that with the release of the new dual-core G5 chips...aftermarket companies like Daystar/Powerlogix/Sonnet/OWC could possibly make a aftermarket upgrade card for the previous G5 towers.

As Boyd said, do the math, if and when, such a beast arrives.
