Does anyone know of a similar forum as this for digital photography. I won't even hope that it is the quality and scope of this forum but nothing ventured nothing gained.

If you have specific questions I would be happy to answer them. I teach photography and digital photography part time at a local art school. Most photography forums are not as polite. A lot of trolling for arguements and a great deal of brand bias. I'm also moving this topic to a different forum.

Its up to the Kennelmaster, Chris, but there are additional issues that Chris would have to resolve. For one, you need a forum moderator and Chris does not lightly hand these out. Another would be worthwhile contributors to guide such forums.

Really, what this points to, is what a great job Chris has done here. Like Jeff points out that many other forums degenerate into flame wars...something that has taken a lot of effort from Chris, et al, to prevent.

Actually if there's enough interest then we might do it. Jeff would be best qualified to moderate, but he is already an uber-wrangler with control over all forums and I would hate to add to the workload that he already so generously donates (I wish I could pay these guys). But there would need to be an existing body of relevant threads before we create a forum to dump them into. That's how it works around here, in order to prevent empty forums.

Don't know if i can help, but i am a media graduate, just now entering a masters of multi-media and design, a lot of work covers digital photography, especially in the realms of photoshop and similar.

If you needed someone to control a little and steer people in the correct direction i would be happy to help.

I'd be more than happy to help to Chris, while I have no formal qualifications like Jeff and Kermie, I earned my spurs in the trenches of sports photography, both digital and film.

Not that this bbs couldn't offer a good digital photography forum, I am sure it could... and it would be welcome...

But the whole http://www.dpreview.com/ site is very comprehensive in regards to this subject.

DP Review is an excellent site, especially for technical specifications and information. It has a very active discussion area. However, most of my students are put off by the site. As novices they feel intimidated and find the atmosphere less than friendly. They are very put off by the brand wars that take place there. I will say as a more experienced user I have rarely felt that way. Many of my students gravitate to Steve's Digicams http://www.steves-digicams.com/default.htm they just started their forum areas in June. but the site has been around a long time and will have the 100 millionth visitor this month. The general consensus among my students is that it is a friendlier place.

I think a general photographic forum could stand on it's own merits here. If instituted it should take a very broad approach and deal with both digital and film still photography. It could be divided into two areas, hardware (cameras, lenses, tripods etc.) and usage (how to use the hardware).

However, as Chris points out, we need some posts. If there is a real interest in photography discussions here start posting and we'll see what develops. Sorry, photography humor.

You could check out www.photo.net, its the best single site for photography (both film based and digital) in my opinion and I have learnt a lot from there. There are more articles than can be read in a lifetime and a lot of talented photographers as well as other photo- related people (lab technicians, designers etc) contribute to the site.

I tend to agree with Adrian. Photo.net is the site for ALL photographic needs. They span the spectrum of all things related to photography.

Photo.net is battling against something that DVInfo.net has miraculously been able to avoid so far...flamers. Unfortunately, the threads there often turn into flame wars. And the critiques are often a joke...I get the idea that some people just spend their time cruising through photo submissions so that they can get their jollies by blasting them.
