View Full Version : UWOL 55 PART 2 - Tales of wonders and woes
Trond Saetre July 7th, 2020, 02:46 AM As always, interaction between the players is encouraged.
The good, the bad, the ugly... What goes great, what did not go as planned, and everything in between, about the making of your UWOL55 -part 2 films.
Don't be afraid to ask if you have any questions.
And pay special attention to rule 11: Have fun!
Dale Guthormsen July 19th, 2020, 02:21 PM As this round started I got the call for my shoulder surgery, Been waiting sense November, glad to have it done. It truly has put a game changer on my filming. I got a new Elderbrock back pack that can carry all my camera gear and has a sheath for my Vinton on steel gitzo legs. So going exploring as planned is out of the question. Just the camera rig is 22 pounds, then all the other stuff and tripod makes it about a 50 lb. load. Can't carry that on my shoulder for some time, start therapy in a week.
I came up with a new plan of attack. Of course we have had typical prairie winds to battle and they have been pretty unrelenting. I do have about 45 seconds of decent footage.
Glad there is a month more!
BOY AM I OUT OF PRACTICE.
Hope everyone is having fun!
Trond Saetre July 19th, 2020, 02:37 PM That's a massive setup, Dale! Good to hear the surgery is done.
No filming here yet, but I guess the young one has some ideas for her entry.
Kevin Railsback July 23rd, 2020, 01:47 PM Still working on an idea.
Was hoping to be cleared from my surgery but looks like another month. Really want to incorporate Neowise in the film somehow.
Trond Saetre July 25th, 2020, 03:21 AM Was out exploring a new place together with Irmelinn yesterday. Hopefully she can use some of the footage for her entry. Prehistoric idea.
Phil Murray July 26th, 2020, 09:50 AM Glad your shoulder is on the mend, Dale.
We spent 4 1/2 month under quarantine here before it was lifted in most of the country, but a lot of places have still been closed off. (Most small villages here have closed off access to themselves. One small community has closed off visitor access by train to Machu Picchu -- which still remains closed anyway -- using machetes to stop supply trains and search them for outsiders!)
There is a possibility that we will go back into quarantine soon, but it's all unclear what will happen right now. We should know more in the coming days.
I'm keeping my fingers crossed for a little more opening up. I'd been planning to get back into the jungle around Machu Picchu and do some real exploring for some Inca sites that possibly haven't been seen in a few hundred years. I was also hoping to film some, but I don't know if that opportunity is going to come before the end of the current UWOL Challenge.
Trond Saetre July 26th, 2020, 10:01 AM That's a very long time under quarantine, Phil! Hope you and your family are all well.
Fingers crossed for the situation will improve in your area too. You have a fantastic location to explore.
Phil Murray July 26th, 2020, 10:29 AM Thanks, Trond. Doing fine here except for the LONG lockdown. I hope you and your family are all doing well, too.
Exploring really is my occupation now. One good thing about the quarantine is that is allowed me a LOT of time to do academic research. There has been a rumor of one more "lost" city in the mountains and I've managed to uncover a few clues about where it might possibly be in an area including a big clue from one person who claims to know where it is. (He's the world's leading authority on the area, but is a little eccentric at times.)
I've been dying to get back to the jungle since I discovered the place that he says is near the ruins. Of course, I'll probably only find nothing more than snakes and a few small ruins, but all the puzzle pieces seem to point to one place that hasn't been explored before. If I could find something, it would sure be a pretty cool video under the topic!
Trond Saetre July 26th, 2020, 10:32 AM Would be awesome if you find that ancient city! Watch out for the snakes :)
Mick Jenner August 4th, 2020, 03:36 AM Right, the talent ,well mammals in this case, footage now in the can
Script partly written.
To do, more establishing and link clips and some time lapse.
No doubt over the next couple of weeks something else will appear in the my viewfinder and a total rehash will happen.
Hope you are all managing to get some footage for an entry.
Trond Saetre August 10th, 2020, 09:29 AM Hope you all are safe and healthy, and that the covid19 situation lets you go out and make your films.
Remember rule 11: Have fun!
Trond Saetre August 17th, 2020, 04:07 AM How is everyone doing? Been quiet in here.
Regarding Covid-19:
More and more countries report increasing trends and number of infected.
I'd like to hear how it is in your countries. More specifically, if you are able to go out and do some filming.
If needed, we can extend deadline, but I'd like to get some inputs first.
Mick Jenner August 18th, 2020, 10:02 AM Hi Trond,
Think the virus is on the march again all over the world at the moment. Although I am lucky and now have most of my footage, I'm sure there are others who are struggling. In the interest of fairness to those who may still have to get footage and who could be stopped at the last minute because of lockdowns, I would respectfully suggest that this round is suspended on the proviso that those who have already have footage specially for this round can use it when we are back up and running. Maybe have two themes for the next challenge the one for this round and another? Those entering can then decide which theme to follow.
Stay safe all
Mick
Trond Saetre August 18th, 2020, 10:25 AM Thanks for the comment, Mick.
Maybe the next challenge could be a "free theme," just to get things going again.
Been a while since we have done that.
Yes, if this #55-2 challenge also ends up being suspended, it is a good idea to allow footage shot for this one, to be used in the next round.
Bob Safay August 19th, 2020, 02:08 PM Trond, I think that is an excellent idea. I went out last week to film and every place I went was either closed of severely restricted. Kevin and Dale, hope you to are mending. Take care and stay safe. Bob
Trond Saetre August 20th, 2020, 03:15 AM Thanks, Bob.
Here in Norway, we are free to travel wherever we want domestically, but advised not to cross the border, unless it is necessary. I guess we are lucky, compared to many other countries, even though the covid19 numbers are on the rise here too. I fear we see the beginning of the second big wave in Europe.
I'll announce tomorrow what we do with the current challenge. Suspending uwol is an option I think of.
Phil Murray August 20th, 2020, 07:02 AM We went back under quarantine in the Cusco area on August 1 for the month, but most places are closed. It's often hard to even walk up into the mountains behind my home because almost every small village is closed off to prevent outsiders from bringing in COVID.
I had pretty much given up on getting something done before the end of the month, but I might be able to put something together using some footage I was able to shoot one day last month when we were technically free from quarantine. Techniocally, I'm not supposed to be filming at all, but no one's into the mountains to know and, of course, up there, there's no chance of catching or spreading anything. The hardest part is I have climb 300 meters every time just to get out of the city! Travel outside the city is closed off and no one really knows what's coming next.
I've also been really busy as I've become the unofficial news source for expats as well as foreigner who want to keep up with what's going on in Peru. It started out back in March as a report for me friends back in the US and has grown into something really big so I spend quite a few hours each day on it.
It's possible I've already had COVID. Looking back I might have had some very minor symptoms a couple of weeks ago. Of course, without testing I don't know, but all along I am extremely careful to avoid contact with others so I might share anything I had without realizing it.
I hope everyone and your families are all doing well and staying safe. I think it will be very interesting to see what you can create under these challenging circumstances.
Mick Jenner August 21st, 2020, 02:55 AM Just thought Trond, rather than cancel UWOl 55 why not suspend the the closing date idenfinatly until a suitable safe time time and open up the theme from the current one to " UWOL During Covid" or something similar and allow anything filmed since March to be used illustrate life of a UWOLer during this period.
Trond Saetre August 21st, 2020, 03:52 AM Mick, that is a great idea. Been thinking a lot today about what to do and how to best keep UWOL going through this pandemic, and how to keep it as fair as possible.
An "UWOL through corona" will be more or less a free theme, which let those who already have filmed something, use that too. That is a major factor for me.
I'll post the details in the theme release thread.
UWOL challenge 55-2 deadline is suspended, effective immediately.
Tony McGuire August 22nd, 2020, 04:19 PM Here in Ireland (Rep) we are still free to travel at the moment but some counties are in quarantine at the moment. I was temping to get some footage of an old house and farm sheds and was stopped by a local asking was part of the group going around lifting dogs. (we have a had a lot of dogs all over Ireland being stolen. I have left my idea for now but have a new one which I may be able to do as I know the owners of the land I need to access for this idea. Now with the deadline gone I may get time to do it.
I hope every one here is keeping well and look after yourself
Dale Guthormsen August 24th, 2020, 02:40 PM Oh darn,
Im actually cutting 6 minuters down today. had some editing trouble (am I rusty) went to vegas forum for advice and thought Id pop in here and just read the news!
Well it does give me a chance to upgrade my footage and that aint so bad.
An open theme is a great idea but how to keep things under 3 minutes, Hum?
It is fun to be back at it after such a long break.
Shoulder doing well, glad I have a tripod.
Hang tuff everyone!
Trond Saetre August 24th, 2020, 03:10 PM Dale, the time limit is 4 minutes these days. :)
Geir Inge August 25th, 2020, 07:32 AM Hi guys.
This covid-19 virus more or less drives the whole world in a quarantine mode.
It is good that we have UWOL that has its own boundaries, where we can practically meet virtually.
I work in the health care system, where many of us when it comes to travel/leisure travel, have limits and limitations in relation to this pandemic.
It has gradually become easier, especially domestically to travel. That way, there have been some domestic trips, spring and summer.
Because it has been holiday time for my wife and me, I promised to leave the camcorder at home, as we were also celebrating our 31st wedding anniversary.
Still, I took my GoPro 8 and of course my cell phone, so there were some recordings with these. In between all the trips I have made some recordings with my camcorder.
Occasional recordings have been made from March to now, and there will probably more recordings as this round is expanded.
I had a working title for my contribution, "Mountain hikes - discovering my own country".
I have walked a lot in the mountains this spring and summer and then there was a lot of photography and shooting, as I said with gopro and my cell phone.
We'll see how the result ends up, you do not have to change focus even if the subject has changed.
What I think, it's hard to put together/edit a 4 min film from a periodic recording time of several months.
I just have to keep reminding myself that Uwol is a challenge :)
Hope you all are doing well, these are tough times for many in our vulnerable world.
My wife's cousin lost her husband in this pandemic, so it's affecting most of us in some way or another.
Dale and Kevin: Good luck with surgery and recovery.
Mick and Phil: I look forward to seeing your films about mammals (in Britain I guess) and jungle adventures from Machu Picchu.
Thank you Trond for being who you are.
Take care of each other.
The attached picture is from Jotunheimen, a mountain area in Norway.
Trond Saetre August 25th, 2020, 07:45 AM To those of you who (more or less) have made your films: It is perfectly fine to keep them, even though the theme has changed into a very open/free theme.
Once in a while I get questions or see comments, about the 4 minute limit. Remember that it is just that, a maximum lenght limit. We do not have any minimum time requirements in UWOL.
This year has definitely been unusual and a challenge in every aspects.
My goal is to set a deadline within the next few months, but who knows how the pandemic develops, so the key word is flexible. Even that can be a challenge.
There will be at least 3 weeks notice when the new deadline is set.
Mark Hartopp September 21st, 2020, 03:01 PM Hi Everyone,
Hope your all well. So what's happening with UWOL. I was hoping to take part but I live on the cost in a town that relies on tourism. So while out of lockdown the town has been full of people who don't care and can't social distance. I've stayed away and watch more terrible day time tv.
I was hoping now the tourists have gone I can get out more, but it looks like the UK is going back into lockdown as infection rate rises again, we'll find out more over the next few days what restrictions will be in place.
Is everyone finding it tuff to get out and be safe?
Trond Saetre September 21st, 2020, 03:06 PM I have suspended UWOL challenge until further notice, due to the corona developments.
Several places around the world have restrictions which, makes it more or less difficult to go out and film for UWOL.
I hope we can re-launch UWOL later this year.
