What's the chance I can get 8 hours and 38 minutes on 4 dvd's. This is a straight lecture video that will have little effects etc, probably only titles.
I have to slice and dice it, so I was thinking of a 4 dvd case.

If you had access to a dual layer dvd burner you could try to fit it onto 2 dual layer dvds then pop those into one dvd case(a two dvd case).
Since it is a lecture, you might be able to get away with a lower compression rate that will let you fit more onto a disk.

I think optimum quality runs about 2hours per disc.. lack of effects and generally lack of motion (i'm guessing its tripod work) means you shouldn't worry about it really. Just use a good encoder and several passes, and i'm sure it'll look fine.
I dig those multi disc cases, i have some of the 10way ones, very useful! They're about the same size as VHS tapes, genius.

Thanks guys, I used a lower audio compression and squeezed it on 4 DVDS.
Thanks again.
About the cases, I use these http://www.tapeandmedia.com/detail.asp?product_id=4DVD3-DKGRY
Be warned though, I have yet to find decent paper to print the covers with that is for this size w/o cutting. Tapeandmedia.com doesn't sell the cover for these cases, and I told them "Shame on you!" :} They are nice cases though.
