I saw, elsewhere, a suggestion rather than a statement, that El Capitan on an iMac 5K machine will handle 10 bit files, like those off my GH5.

Is this correct? I have a iMac 5K 27 inch machine, but have not as yet moved from High Sierra to El Capitan. (Reasons for this.)

I know FCPX will handle 10 bit but there are processes I need to go through, sorting and editing files, which necessitate my seeing the footage before it enters the NLE stage.

Here's a link to the codecs that Apple FCPX supports:

Thanks but it's not FCPX Codecs I'm asking about. Rather it's whether, or in what circumstances, hardware or software, Quicktime Player will play 10 bit video files.

Ah, I see.
If you're having problems or concerns about Quicktime Player, have you thought about this as it's for Mac OS:

There are comments from people on Reddit saying that it plays GH5 files smoothly, etc when people have had problems with other players.

Could be worth a try...
