View Full Version : UWOL 53 "The Neighborhood" by Gordon Hoffman
Gordon Hoffman December 2nd, 2019, 07:10 PM Well at least I managed to get something done for this round. Pretty simple short video but the theme was a little bit challenging for me at this time of year. Tried to do a light laid back approach.

Geir Inge December 3rd, 2019, 07:36 AM Hi Gordon.
This round, the plan was to film a deer family that houses a house, not far from my home.
I changed my plan eventually, but it's brilliant that you filmed these animals.
The story you tell is great.
Personally, I am a big fan of telling fictional stories
that blend different sequences together in a natural way.
I think your video is super in that way.
See that you also have magpies in your backyard.
They are fun, active and noisy, but also very smart birds.
Thank you for a great video, Gordon
Gordon Hoffman December 3rd, 2019, 08:22 AM Hi Geir Inge. This fall has been a different one here. I think we've been through at least four feet of snow already and the deer just happened to be handy for me. The challenge for me was to figure out what I could do with what I had. Yes we have magpies and I think you can add mischievous to the list too. Not much goes on that they are not aware of I think.
Thanks a lot for watching and commenting. Take care.

Mick Jenner December 3rd, 2019, 09:19 AM Hi Gordon,
Great entry, like the way the story was told by the deer themselves.
Like Geir and yourself my entry originally started with with Deer, but I then went off at a tangent!
Your narration follows the edit well, keeping the story flowing as well as keeping this viewer engrossed right to the end.
Great editing, coloring, script writing and narration, well done.
Gordon Hoffman December 5th, 2019, 07:03 AM Hi Mick
Thanks for the comments. Much appreciated. Interesting how things work out with the three of us thinking of deer. For me deer are pretty handy at the moment so not really a big challenge getting some footage.
Thanks again.

Trond Saetre December 6th, 2019, 06:17 AM Hi Gordon,
Finally found time to watch the entries, starting with yours.
Nice film you made!
I like that you were able to tell a story too, and your voiceover is so easy to understand.
Yes, the theme could be tough for us up north in the winter months, but you did well.
Well done!
Bob Safay December 6th, 2019, 02:32 PM Gordon, great video. I really laughed at how close the birds would come to the deer. And what a beautiful rack on that buck. I also think your narration was just enough. A fun video to watch and a very good entry. Bob
Gordon Hoffman December 8th, 2019, 05:40 PM Hi Trond - Thanks for watching and the nice comments. Much appreciated. Interesting where the entries are from this round.
Bob - Thanks for taking the time to watch and comment. I suspect harsher weather can change how different species react to each other. They are all around enough to know that they don't have to much to worry about from each other. Thanks again.

Phil Murray December 15th, 2019, 06:33 AM I REALLY enjoyed watching this -- saw it all the way through twice, in fact. It wasn't so much the shots themselves as there's probably only so much you can do this time of the year, but the story line and the commentary that you weaved through to make it all so much more than a collection of shots and very enjoyable to watch. I kept waiting o see what would happen next and that's
I just got a new camera a few weeks ago and am, out of necessity, learning more about coloring in Resolve, so I find myself myself looking at color a lot more lately. I thought you did a really good job of getting a very natural color without going overboard with saturation that I often see. It looked like a winter scene, but the colors of the animals, grass, etc., seemed realistic and natural. I find that so hard to get that just right myself, but yours looks great.
