I just tried the Marantz PMD-602A 2-channel audio DSLR interface with a HF G40.
At about $100 it is a good deal and works well, if a bit bulky. While marketed for use with DSLR cameras, it works with camcorders and it a reasonable option to get useful XLR input, phantom power, limiting, and individual channel metering with camcorders such as the G40 that do not have these features. (It also provides a headphone amp.)
To use it effectively the G40 needs to be in "M" mode, external mic set to LINE level input (to make this setting it needs to be connected to the G40), and in my case the manual audio level set to about 20..
The only downside is that it is a but bulky, but it can mount under the camcorder and has tripod sockets. It is powered by 4 Alkaline AA cells with claimed life of 12 hours with phantom power on.
