Just scanning the JVC professional site for manuals and specs and found the following link to their soon to be released $399 DVD player that will be able to play HDV, m2t and other formats directly off the disc. It says dual layer DVDs will hold up to an hour of footage in HD format. Remember JVC plays in 720 land rather than 1080.

Looks like portable HD playout is near.

I just took a closer look at the specs for this player, and it says it will play an MPEG2-TS file at bit rates up to 25 Mbps via a USB2 connection. I also found a comparison on the Avel web site which suggests the JVC version isn't much different from the LinkPlayer2, with a few interesting differences such as the addition of a DVI connector and an autoplay feature.

Kevin is right. The unit is made by I-O Data, with a DVI connector.

I have the older I-O Data AVeL LinkPlayer2 and it plays 720p30 18.5 mbps mpeg2-ts (m2t) straight off the JVC GR-HD1, and also 1080i50/60 25 mbps m2t straight off the Sony Z1u. I have both cams so I can confirm that.

At a local Sony expo that I attended they had LCDs and Plasmas playing the same video footage shot off the fx1. When the rep press play the play symbol and the wording BLU RAY DISC appeared at the bottom of the screen. What a tease the player was hidden though.

I actually own the Kuro-Obi (JVC) and it is "Impressive".

Actually, it plays 720p AND 1080i MPEG2-TS and WMVHD

Broadcast atsc isn't actually that high a bit rate. Most two hour movies are in the range of 9-12 gb so some will fit on a dl-dvd.
