Sooo, the stork delivered our new iMac Pro and low and behold, the thing has all USB-C ports, not Thunderbolt 2. And all my G-Tech drives have Thunderbolt 2. I got one adapter from Apple for 50.00 to run my G-Tech drives as needed and any other Thunderbolt 2 drives I have.

Moving forward, I noticed G-Tech has a USB-C SSD in the works but didn't know if anyone has seen other SSD options for USB-C. I see some on Amazon and Newegg but I'm leery of ssd drives that are under 200.00.

I'm not going to buy any more adapters, I'm just going to go USB-C from here on out.

I’ve been using this Samsung T5 SSD USB-C drive (https://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1346577-REG/samsung_mu_pa500b_am_t5_500gb_portable_ssd.html) for a few months now. 500GB for about $150 is a bit of a premium, of course.

Though I’m on USB3/TB2, I bought it as an external editing drive for a particular project, and have used it with the included cable on USB3. It’s great so far, though I’m probably not stressing bandwidth with MP4/FHD. Did some transfers to a TB3 Mac earlier this week, that was fine too.

I saw that Blackmagic’s demo of the new 4k Pocket Cinema Camera at NAB included direct hookup to that same T5 drive. Using it, powered through USB-C, as external storage. Looked great, if a little unsure in the ergonomics.

I really do like this drive so far!

I saw that little Samsung on Amazon and almost bought it. I'm sure if you're like me, you've ended up with an army of drives over the years, so I didn't want to prematurely buy it and then have to spend 8 times that for the g-tech drive. I'm glad you like the drive. That's a good recommendation for me.

The iMac Pro has Thunderbolt 3 and USB 3.0 which use USB-C connectors (both have the same physical connectors, but T3 devices will need to connect to the dedicated T3 slots). It also has USB 3.0 in the older connector type.

For external RAID and SSD options, you should look at Thunderbolt 3 peripherals to maximize data throughput.
