Noticed this today after getting the camera. Very bad pattern noise (which all the reviews said was eliminated!) with ISO 800 or 1600. Check it out:

This was taken at ISO 1600. This is annoying enough for me to take the camera back. I had the original Digital Rebel and never had a problem at 1600 (it was grainy, of course, but no pattern noise like that).
Basically EVERY picture I take at ISO 1600 has this pattern.
Defect? Normal?
Thanks.

Can anyone at least verify that this is NOT normal?

I can try on my own XT, but the highest ISO levels always introduce a lot of
noise. No way around it. However, you can set the digital noise reduction on
in the custom functions!

Thanks for the reply Rob. It is not normal. I checked with Canon, sent then the picture and they confirmed this. I replaced the camera, and it is fine. Yes, lots of noise at ISO 1600, just like there would be with 35mm film, but not in a pattern.

There is a great little program you can buy that will get rid of noise in pics shot with a high ISO---its called Neat Image.

So it seems you got a new body that solved the problem Peter? That's good news!

Did they replace the camera under Canon warranty, or what? I just noticed similar banding on my high-ISO files the other night and was going to just ignore it for now, but if it's a fixable problem I might as well find out what my options are.

I replaced the camera at the store. Problem was gone.
