View Full Version : Comparison Chart: HD100 vs. XL H1 Chris Hurd October 27th, 2005, 09:22 PM See http://www.hdvinfo.net/articles/jvcprohd/comparexlh1.php Please advise any corrections or additions. Thanks, Thomas Smet October 27th, 2005, 11:11 PM 4:2:0 and not 4:1:1 Chris Hurd October 27th, 2005, 11:18 PM Corrected -- thanks! Barry Green October 28th, 2005, 01:26 AM Under HD Frame Rates, the JVC also supports 25p. Under SD Frame Rates, the JVC also supports 576/50p. Those are not region-specific, every HD100 and HD101 supports 720/24,25,30 and 480/60p and 576/50p. The region-specific recording is NTSC 480/24p&60i, and PAL 576/25p&50i. For aperture range, the JVC is not a constant 1.4 throughout the zoom range, it definitely loses at least a full stop at the tele end. Didn't measure exactly though. It's marked 1.4, but the effective speed is slower at the tele end. Kevin Shaw October 28th, 2005, 06:34 PM Chris: can you find out more about how data is routed from the sensors to the uncompressed HD outputs? Also, what will the bit depth be on those outputs (8, 10 or what)? Chris Hurd October 28th, 2005, 07:04 PM For who knows what reason, Canon will not state the bit depth of their DSP or the SDI output at this time. Pete Bauer October 28th, 2005, 07:32 PM FWIW, Canon won't, but Cineform will. David Newman has lamented in the Cineform blog that the HD-SDI of the H1 is 8bit, and it appears he is stating that based on the actual use of a working H1: http://cineform.blogspot.com/ http://www.cineform.com/products/CanonXLH1Support.htm http://www.cineform.com/ Robert Mann Z. October 28th, 2005, 08:38 PM thanks for that chart it really makes me question the price difference when you see all you get with the jvc Ken Hodson October 29th, 2005, 02:18 AM Nice chart. A little confussion on the SD modes. The HD100 has true 16:9 SD modes 60p/50p(460,000 pixels) as well as the DV modes (350,000 pixels) the chart does not make that very clear. I am surprised the HD100 does not have AV/DV pass through. Its little brother does. David Newman October 29th, 2005, 11:07 AM More information for you chart. We do have both cameras so a could spend more time checking the data, but here are a couple of additions from memory. Canon has a manual gain control that goes to -3db (it least it has that position on the camera --only noticed this yesterday.) More details on the Canon I can't give until they hit production, I don't want our pre-production unit (although I think the unit is ready to go) to skew the data. JVC has more frame rates if you bypass the compression and digitize the analog feed. We knew before receiving the camera that 50p and 60p modes where available. As the AJA HD10A analog convertor only works on the 60p modes we have done all only testing at that frequency. 60p to 24p slowmotion (2.5X over-crank) or full rate 720p60 are great modes for this camera. We also discovered two days ago that when the camera is in 24p mode the analog output is 48p with pulldown into 60p. This mean with the right equipment this camera can do (at 1280x720) 24p, 25p, 30p, 48p, 50p and 60p. A lot of options for an inexpensive "Varicam." Chris Hurd October 29th, 2005, 11:22 AM Thanks for that input -- much appreciated! John Mitchell October 31st, 2005, 07:13 AM Just trying to work out what A/V DV passthru is - is that when you use the camera as a transcoder? BTW Errata JVC GYHD-100 Safety zone can be set 16x9, 14x9, 4x3 or 16x9 + 4x3 Don't know about underscan, as I think it's not applicable to the HD standard. All data displays can be turned off, but only via the menu. Chris Hurd October 31st, 2005, 11:32 AM Hi John, AV/DV passthrough refers to transcoding... in by FireWire, out by analog. Or in by analog, out by FireWire. As far as I know, the HD100 does not offer that feature. Thanks for the corrections. Underscan refers to the EVF, does the shooter see the entire image through the EVF. On the XL H1, the EVF does not show the full image, only about 85-90% of it. Wasn't sure about the HD100. Kevin Wild October 31st, 2005, 12:49 PM Chris, are you sure about the EVF only showing 85-90% on the H1?? Man, that is so non-professional, if so. I am always very annoyed on the XL2 that you can't trust the EVF to show you what you're actually getting. It's a real pain when shooting things (w/out external monitor) for DVD that will be played on the computer. I've had instances where the boom is in...with web-based stuff you can crop it out, but not with MPG2/DVD. I was hoping they would fix this on the H1 and thought that was the point of having the title safe markings on the EVF, that they would now show you the entire, underscanned frame. KW |
