Hi all :] my first post here!
I have a Tascam DR40 that I use as my primary field recorder paired with an Audio Technica AT875R mic.
I noticed yesterday that it duplicates files for some reason and labels the duplicated file with '4D10.wav'
The duplicated file is exactly the same size as the original so am at a loss as to what this is for?

Thanks in advance!
Al

Welcome to the board.

The DR-40 can be set to dual mode recording. This allows you to set one file for a higher recording level and the other file at a lower, safer level with more headroom in case the sound gets unexpectedly louder.

It's detailed on page 46 of the reference manual.

Thank you so much Jay - that was very informative (seems like a good option to keep on)
Alas I was sold the unit without a manual but will scope for one online :] Cheers!

The manual as well as the latest firmware updates can be downloaded from Tascam.:
Product: DR-40 | TASCAM (http://tascam.com/product/dr-40/downloads/)

The 'safety' tracks can be set to either 6 or 12dB lower the mains. Instructions start on page 54 of the manual.
