Hi everyone,

Does anyone have an idea what the fastest external SDXC card reader is? I have a Kingston USB3 from a few years back, and it transfer at around 42MB/s but when I transfer the same SDXC card on a friends Dell Laptop, his internal SD Reader slot transferred it at 80/84MB/s, can any external SD Card Readers match those speeds?

Thank you,

There could also be substantial differences in the transfer rate of your drive you're copying the files to, compared to the drive in his computer.

One of the newer USB Type C readers, coupled with a computer that has a true USB Type C input, with very fast internal storage, and a fast reading card would give the shortest transfer time.

I don't have any real experience with any specific newer USB Type C readers so I can't point to one that has been proven to be fast.

There seems to be a lot of differences in how computer makers are actually implementing the Type C controllers and connectors, with wide speed variations.

Again, that's just what I've read on the interwebs while looking for new computers for myself, family and a friend.

Someone will hopefully respond with more real world knowledge.

I was using a usb2 reader, little thumb drive size job which has a side slot for the card, i was getting 18MB/s transfer speed.
I've just received a reader i bought from ebay, a Lexar dual slot reader, i'm now getting 90MB/s transfer speed.

Calumet want £49 for the same reader

I'm wondering if i get 2 readers then i can transfer 2 cards, each at 90MB/s at the same time ?

Edit, just did a quick test, file from portable usb hard drive onto pc 40MB/s, at the same time file from Lexar card reader, still getting 90MB/s. so it looks like 2 readers could work.
