Not an X70 owner, but borrow my buddy's X70 frequently ;-)

From the manual:

In Menu - use EXEC button to select (REC/OUT SET) > [OUTPUT SELECT] > the jack that you want to use for output.

If memory is correct (without looking it up again), if in 4K record mode, you cannot output live video when recording. Must be in HD mode to get HDMI output. I've used Atomos Assassin and Ninja 2 units with the X70 to record 1080i output via HDMI and worked great for both.

Is that what you're trying to do, output while recording 4K?

The Ver. 3.00 firmware update recently came out which may fix this issue, as it says "5. External output and the face detection function is now supported when recording in XAVC QFHD."

Have not yet tried this myself. But I'm sure that without the update, you can not output video when in 4K mode, at least not while also recording in camera.

Every time I hit the record button, my external monitor goes black. I have the latest firmware, 3.0.

You cannot get LCD/EVF and video output at the same time in 4K while the camera is actively recording in 4K mode.
