View Full Version : Lumix GX85 Traveling Light
Mark Rosenzweig July 3rd, 2016, 07:43 AM The kit lens for the camera is a collapsible, tiny 12-32mm f.3.5-5.6 lens, which is supposed to be very sharp. The combo is thus very small, and the kit lens uses the dual stabilization function of the camera, in 4K.
Here is a handheld 4K test video using the kit lens in bright light, including a short run with the camera, and in dim light (Grand Central Terminal and NYC subway station):

Select 4K for best viewing (also downloadable).
There is also the collapsible Lumix 35-100mm f4.0-5.6 lens, also small and uses the dual stabilization function. The combo is also tiny and light.
Here is a 4K handheld outdoors test video using this lens. Also tests the built-in audio, as there is some outdoors jazz playing (unamplified, thank goodness). Much more interesting than the above.

These were shot using the Standard setting, with only NR reduced to -2.
This is the dual kit:

Mark Rosenzweig July 4th, 2016, 12:10 PM Most museums do not allow tripods, monopods or gimbals. So camera/lens stabilization is essential. A museum video captures what it is like to visit a museum - you see the exhibits, and the people (many of whom are taking photos!).

Shot in Standard, as it seemed to capture the true colors of the art best. NR -2.

No overheating in 89 F heat and sun. Stabilization up close even at 70mm (eq) seems good.
Mark Rosenzweig July 10th, 2016, 06:33 AM I shot this 4K video handheld using the 25mm f1.7 lens on the GX85, to assess its performance using IBIS and in dim light. This is possibly the worst-lit museum in the world, with dark rooms and glowing walls and mixed lighting. The only well-lit room is the souvenir shop!

Thanks. I was pleased. I shot in shutter-priority mode, at 1/60th. Because Panasonic G cameras do not report either aperture or ISO when shooting in S (or shutter speed in A) within Creative Video Mode, I do not know for sure whether all the shots were at f1.7. Given the light and the shallow dof in many shots, I suspect many were, but not all.
Steve Bleasdale July 10th, 2016, 04:06 PM Cool thanks Mark, i am seriously looking at this cam, even though my little g7 is amazing, but maybe the great stabilization with various other lens i have, i can broaden my horizons a bit more. steve

Not handheld.
Mark Rosenzweig July 23rd, 2016, 04:18 PM I found an old Olympus Zuiko 9-18mm zoom - unstabilized - that now can be employed (with adaptor) for handheld 4K video, using the unique perspective of an ultra wide-angle lens. This lens, which gives me a 20mm eqi.fov, was the lightest and smallest ultrawide zoom 43 lens made by Olympus, and it is indeed small, not having to have OIS and not being very fast. The autofocus sounds like gears being mashed on an 18-wheeler, but it does the job to attain focus. I just never let it move during a shot.
