View Full Version : UWOL 39 - Tales of wonders and woes
Trond Saetre July 3rd, 2016, 06:04 AM Bring the stories of the making of your films.
What goes well, what did not go as planned, and everything in between.
This is the place to share it.
Have fun :)
Vishal Jadhav July 6th, 2016, 02:51 AM Due to travel, i missed signing in it self
Currently trying to shoot something interesting, fish migration over the western ghats , hope to get some visuals.
All the best to everyone this round , looking forward to seeing wonderful films
Paul Wood July 6th, 2016, 04:01 PM Whilst I don't yet have a plan (no surprise there then), I missed the harvest in the local fields today due to other commitments- I'm not sure they would have fitted to my entry, but some nice sunset shots would have looked good....clouds of dust around the harvester in a nice sunset yellow.
Maybe tomorrow?
Kevin Railsback July 6th, 2016, 08:36 PM I have an idea but sadly all the footage I shoot until the 14th of July belongs to the state of South Dakota since they are paying me to film the nature section of a film for their new state parks visit center.
Sucks cause I'm getting some amazing stuff!!!
Trond Saetre July 7th, 2016, 01:47 AM Kevin, don't you have a friend or the lady who you could instruct exactly how to set up a camera and tell them how and what to film? Problem solved :)
Trond Saetre July 13th, 2016, 03:32 PM It's been quiet here this round. Hope you all are busy outdoors filming your entries.
Have fun! :)
Steve Siegel July 15th, 2016, 05:44 AM Although I am having trouble getting it to fit the theme, I am putting together a film to demonstrate some relatively overlooked techniques that UWOLers may find interesting and useful for rehabbing old footage and for taking video in a different direction from what we are all used to seeing. Will you like it? Will you not? Time will tell.
Trond Saetre July 15th, 2016, 01:41 PM Steve, now you really are tempting us. Your project sounds interesting. I look forward to see what you come up with.
Catherine Russell July 30th, 2016, 09:01 AM Hi everyone, I miss you all! I'm looking forward to your entries and am sorry the sharks have a few "friends" to keep them company.
Steve--- what are you up to? I'm sure I will like it, whatever it is. A fresh perspective is most always a good thing in my book.
I have a few wonders to share, even though I'm not entered this round.
First, earlier this month our world traveler, Bob Safay, ventured to Colorado and we actually met up for an afternoon! This is one of the most fantastic upshots of the UWOL community: actually meeting friends you would otherwise never meet and just might get the opportunity to have fun together. You all are gearing up for this very thing in October, and let me say, it's a delight. I've attached a photo a passerby took of us for posterity, bad focus and all.
My second wonder to share is that with Bob's great advice, I am now a proud owner of my very first professional camcorder, a Canon XF 300. And wow, wow, wow! Bob even has sent over a training DVD so I can actually learn how to run this incredible piece of equipment.
So just maybe, next round I will enter and actually put up footage worth looking at!
My third wonder is looking forward to soaking up your skill and your "backyards" this round.
Keep at it, all!
Cat
Trond Saetre July 30th, 2016, 09:06 AM Catherine, welcome to the gang of XF300 users. It's an amazing camera!
Has Bob given you his custom presets yet, or do you want me to send mine to you?
Very cool to see the US- uwol get together!
Catherine Russell July 30th, 2016, 10:06 AM Hey Trond!
Sure, send the presets over. The DVD has a few suggestions too. It looks like I have an entire community to help me along with this camera, which I'm thrilled! Surrounded by you guys, I'm looking forward to having this camera a comfortable extension of my right arm. (Is this a universal saying?). I am so excited. A decade with an unusable camera and two months without anything at all.... this feels like heaven!
Trond Saetre July 30th, 2016, 10:23 AM Check your email, Catherine. Your presets are waiting for you.
By the way, you still have a day and a half to make an uwol entry. ;)
Steve Siegel July 30th, 2016, 11:03 AM Hey Cat,
It's nice to see what you look like. You too, Bob. I hope to stop by in the future, as we plan to move to New Mexico within a year or two. Not that far away.
I think I do have something fresh this time, at least it's fresh for me, and I really love the look. Since doing the UWOL entry with the technique, I am working on a short movie, completely in the "artistic" mode. It's letting me use 10 year old footage again, even 20 year old analog stuff that I thought was only suitable for the trash can. When you're as old as I am, you get desperate.
Catherine Russell July 30th, 2016, 11:11 AM Thanks Trond! And LOL, I'm still learning the on/off switch and haven't even taken the camera outside yet! :)
Steve: Oh angst! That's a terrible photo of me and I don't look like that at all ;-). It would be fantastic to have you near the neighborhood, Steve. In a few years, hopefully I'll be really proficient with the camera and we can go shoot together. I am looking so forward to that! Here's to your entry!

Bob Safay July 31st, 2016, 06:15 AM Cat was the perfect hostess. We really had a great visit, and I agree with that is one of the beauties of this group, getting to meet other people. After lunch we visited a sculpture garden. The The best part is that I found out that she lives a short distance from my brother-in-law's house so we will be able to hook up every time I go out to Colorado. Cat, I will send you the preset that I use most. Also, I will walk you through the menu on how to check to make sure that your camcorder has the latest firmware update. Steve, we are in New Mexico are you looking at?
Mike Sims July 31st, 2016, 06:26 AM Phui. I have been away Howling at the MoonHowling at the Moon for so long that I completely forgot that the Challenge was in July not August this year. “Missed it by THAT much.” I was so looking forward to it, but my plan to sign up under Mick’s proposed New-comers category probably wouldn’t have worked anyway. I guess I haven’t been gone THAT long!
Best wishes, all. I can’t wait to see what is going on in your backyards.
Mike Sims July 31st, 2016, 08:17 AM By the way, if Vimeo asks you for a password use "luna". It doesn't always ask for some reason. Also, a while back Cat asked what I have been up to. I still can't completely reveal that, but here are a couple of recent frame-grabs which should give you a good clue.
Trond Saetre July 31st, 2016, 02:32 PM Welcome back, Mike! You have been missed.
Cool pictures. Now we wait for the secrets to be revealed.
Trond Saetre August 7th, 2016, 02:27 PM It's been unusual quiet around here during the July challenge.
Still time to both give the players some well deserved feedback, and also vote for the winners.
Winners will be announced in about 12 hours from now. You have until then to send your votes.
