There are so many good photo browsing apps out there for PC, that allow you to quickly click on a folder and visually see what photos are in it, then clip on one and view it full size.

Is there any software out there that does the same for video files?

I need to comb through many months/years of footage to find certain b-roll for a project, there's got to be a better way than windows explorer + VLC player!

Good question! Never been there, but I'm sure I will one day. Off the top of my head, how about importing a folder full of clips into your NLE and browsing through them in the bin?

I use adobe bridge a lot to browse through my music files but it also works well with videofiles.

The latest version of Edius comes with a piece of software called Grass Valley Browser.

You can use this to catalogue the video, audio and stills on all your hard drives. It seems to allow real time playback and scrubbing of anything you can throw at it, on internal drives, of course, and even external drives connected by FireWire.

The interface comprises of resizeable thumbnails of the media and a playback window plus information about hard drives and files.

It will save pictograms and file info for internal and external drives, whether attached or offline, and will create a windows-type file structure for all the drives.

There are specialist programs that you can buy for this. Editshare make some.

Google's 'Picasa' displays openable thumbnails of the whole or selected bits of the file tree. I've used it (currently V3.9) for some time, very helpful tracking down pics and clips.

Have you tried Sony Catalyst Browse? It is free and does exactly what you are asking. Give it a shot!
