View Full Version : UWOL36 Tales of wonders and woes
Kevin Railsback November 28th, 2015, 11:37 AM Bryce,
I've been coming to Montana for three decades and I've never seen this many animals.
In Iowa maybe I see a deer on the road once a year or so. Driving 52 miles out of the North entrance back to Livingston I'd say between elk, mule deer, white tail deer, pronghorn antelope and bighorn sheep I'd say we easily saw close to a thousand animals. Cars were literally weaving in and out of them on highway 89. It was insane.
My specialty over the years has been North American predators. I have a pretty good idea that some of them will make an appearance in my film. :)
I'm am fortunate to have friends that live here all year round and it's nothing to have several dozen wild turkeys rooting on their front porch, or bobcats crossing a semi-frozen creek.
Was out filming again this morning for what will probably be my final opportunity. Nature didn't disappoint me! :)
Bryce Comer November 28th, 2015, 12:39 PM Wow Kevin,
It sounds amazing! This is Iowa right, not Yellowstone?! :) Any ideas as to why there are so many animals? They must have made there way there from somewhere else. Very interested to see what you put together for this one, sounds like you have had a ball filming all this stuff.
This is a great community, & the little push out the door to go & film something that this contest creates, can be so rewarding. Glad to hear you it has been so rewarding for you.
Vishal Jadhav November 28th, 2015, 01:36 PM Mick nice kingfisher film
Kevin I am excited to see your film , so much of good things in there
I finally have no story at all, so tomorrow I will see how I get the timeline to look
Catherine Russell November 28th, 2015, 05:46 PM Hi Mick:
Beautiful Kingfisher footage! Just to let you know, I'm not the only fan of this footage. As I was watching, my cat, Victor (V for short), sat intently watching and ended up pawing at the screen. You had him mesmerized, and me too. :)
Kevin, you really have my intrigue up! I can't imagine wild animals by the thousands everywhere you turn. You must have been awestruck everywhere you looked. That really is rare! Looking forward to seeing some of this. I have a feeling I'm going to be blown away. All the best pulling it together tomorrow!
Kevin Railsback November 28th, 2015, 08:22 PM Bryce,
Actually I'm in Montana. Well, at least until 9:35 tonight. :)
I'd never see wildlife like thus in Iowa. Maybe a deer every now and then but wildlife isn't easy to see in Iowa.
The huge herds of elk, deer, sheep and antelope were all in the fields as we drove out of Yellowstone, headed North on highway 89 towards Livingston where I have some property.
I hope my film lives up to everyone's expectations. It's some incredible footage, I just need to find a thread to tie it all together.
Gordon Hoffman November 28th, 2015, 09:01 PM Damn you Kevin!! You sure like to tease people. Sounds like this should be interesting.
Gordon
Kevin Railsback November 28th, 2015, 09:15 PM Sorry Gordon. :)
Still trying to find an idea to tie all the footage together.
Sitting here in the Bozeman airport on my laptop trying to find some ideas so I can edit my film tomorrow.
My flight out of Denver is now delayed so I won't get back to Iowa until 4:05am!
I'll be one tired editor tomorrow as I try to piece this together.
I could do a documentary style which if I can't find any other way to present it I will, but I'd love to try and do something different to go with this footage.
If it posts, here's a frame grab of what I'm talking about.
In Iowa you see wild turkeys now and then. They are very skittish and difficult to film. Most use blinds and camo.
To get this shot I'm sitting in my friends living room having a coffee while the Hallmark Channel is playing shooting through the windows which were specially installed distortion free optical glass since her ex-husband is a Nat Geo photographer.
She has three flocks of wild turkeys that roost on her front deck and the most effort I expended to get this shot was carrying my camera from my bedroom downstairs to the upstairs living room. :)
The whole trip has been like this!
Bryce Comer November 28th, 2015, 10:57 PM Oh sorry Kevin, i misread your post. I thought you meant you were filming in Iowa. Having spent 10 days in Yellowstone at the end of September with my parents, i sure am jealous of you right now! :) I can't wait to see your film, but don't worry, i think part of what makes this contest so special is the fact that you got out there & got those amazing shots. If you don't put it all together perfectly this time, you will always have that footage & can edit into something amazing later on.
Geir Inge November 29th, 2015, 01:56 AM Mick: That kingfisher is something else. What a beautiful creature and great captured.
I have never seen these birds alive, so nice that you show it to us. By the way, is it fishing for tadpoles?
Kevin, your teaser. Now I can not sleep until I have seen your video :)
I think this will be an exciting round.
It's good to see you all chatting about. Like good old days, right?
I myself have been put slightly out of business for some days now, because of the flu.
It's that time of year, here up north.
Nevertheless, some recording has been.
This photo of mine was shown on TV two days ago.
I get to record some windy action, the problem in these cases is to prevent the camera from water spray.
No harm done though :)
I'm not finished editing yet, so it will be a close race to the deadline.
Take care everyone.
Vishal Jadhav November 29th, 2015, 03:30 AM Finally done, never had such a small film
Weather changed a lot this month however i went into it with one concept so didnt want to stray from it so decided to keep it small rather than not do it at all.
Excited to see films from others.
Trond Saetre November 29th, 2015, 05:35 AM Thanks for sharing the kingfisher, Mick! I enjoyed watching it.
Kevin, you know how to bring up the excitement level! I expect the Yeti master to deliver something really good!
----------
3 entries uploaded to Vimeo so far. Let there be many more! Bring the weather, ladies and gentlemen!
Gordon Hoffman November 29th, 2015, 06:26 AM Kevin it's always a great feeling when things come together like that. Sometimes things just fall into a persons lap and others you work your butt off for. Then there's the times went things are a complete flop. This is what makes this all interesting
Take care. Oh and get editing!
Gordon
Catherine Russell November 29th, 2015, 11:42 AM I myself have been put slightly out of business for some days now, because of the flu.
It's that time of year, here up north.
Feel better, Geir!
Kevin, your frame grab is a stunner!
Bryce Comer November 29th, 2015, 12:03 PM Hey Geir and Cat,
Hope you are both feeling better soon and that you will find the strength to put something together.
Kevin Railsback November 29th, 2015, 02:25 PM After a delay in my flight from Denver to Iowa I finally hit the bed at 4:30 this morning. My cat Hobbes decided I didn't pay him enough attention when I got home so he proceeded to paw at me before 7:30 this morning.
Ok, well. I'll start dumping footage only to have FCPX crash over and over again after importing footage for about an hour.
Decided to create the import library on another drive and so far, no crashes.
Hope I can get everything imported with no issues tonight so I can start editing!!
Bob Safay November 29th, 2015, 02:57 PM Patience Kevin, patience
Catherine Russell November 29th, 2015, 03:03 PM Hi Bryce!
Thanks for the well-wishes -- I'm currently feeling fine and already have my video submitted. I was just well-wishing on Geir who is the one currently "under the weather" (no pun intended!) :)
Cheers all... the sky's the limit on this one, I think ;-)
Kevin -- your posts remind me of finals week and cramming for exams at university many moons ago (shudder) ...
Steve Siegel November 29th, 2015, 07:16 PM No entry for me this time, as I missed the sign up, but I look forward to seeing everyone else's. This looks like it's going to be a memorable round. Mick, those Kingfishers will probably triple the innkeeper's occupancy next year! You made them look like tropical exotics.
Catherine Russell November 29th, 2015, 08:50 PM Hi Steve:
Many thank you's for participating with us this round even without a video submission this once. Your keen insights a very appreciated.
Kevin Railsback November 29th, 2015, 10:00 PM It's 10:12PM here. Can you believe I'm still working on importing footage?
I really don't understand why I import footage and then the connection to it breaks when I try to import from another file.
I did manage to import a decent amount but I've been left with Plan F which is simply a comparison of the results of weather here in Iowa and the weather in Montana. Not what I wanted to do but life happens when you're making plans.
The music track I originally wanted to use for my idea doesn't work for this comparison video so I have a new one that i sonly 2:30 long. Not sure if I'll end the film there or try someway to continue it on.
Sucks because I've only used a fraction of the footage I intended too. Oh well, it's a film challenge and it certainly has challenged. me. :O)
Andrew Hood November 30th, 2015, 03:24 AM Mick: nice work on the Kingfisher - I think further north in Aus we have a variety of them, very blue in colour. I definitely need to learn more about bird filming - I want to get more footage of the Wedge-Tailed Eagle one of these days.
Kevin - was that meant to be roosting or rooting on the porch? (Post 51 on page 4 of the thread) Quite different meanings in Aus, the latter would be them procreating - although that might suit some nature documentaries. Hopefully you can sort out the technical issues.
Sounds like most people have had some trials this round. I thought I had more time to go and film, don't know where it went this month. Got a few clips earlier on, but have just been out as a last ditched effort with great sunny weather, probably got sunburnt in the process. And I might need fluids too, just skipped a few heartbeats in 20 seconds. I had broader plans early on, and then I had to decide on something simple to make it achievable. It might be more of a stretch for the theme, but it's still mostly related. Have to try and put things together now. There were other locations I really wanted to get footage from today, but time constraints and 'other factors' limited where I could film and how rushed I was. Nice scenery out and about though, even if we got stuck behind a herd of cattle for a while.
Trond Saetre November 30th, 2015, 10:29 AM Tick, tock, clock is ticking and deadline is coming up.
If you haven't got the upload info for vimeo yet, let me know.
Looking forward to see much weather this round!
Bring it, and hope you all have had fun!
Mick Jenner November 30th, 2015, 10:49 AM [QUOTE=Andrew Hood;1904000]Mick: nice work on the Kingfisher - I think further north in Aus we have a variety of them, very blue in colour. Hi Andrew, please you enjoyed the kingfishers. You do have a biggi down there, the kookaburra they are from the same family you also have some other great great birds as well. My son and family live in Adelaide. Went to Kangaroo Island last time we were there, filmed all sorts but, particularly liked the Superb Fairywrens. Small, but beautiful.
Kevin Railsback November 30th, 2015, 11:19 AM Yay, film is almost done.
A few hours more work when I get home and hopefully I'll be uploading before its my bedtime!
Trying to find a way to include more of the wildlife from the trip but having a hard time because the first half of the trip was near 60 and no snow and the second half was a lot of snow and -15.
There's only one glaring sequence because of it but it's a couple cool shots and a different perspective that I may want to leave them in.
It's not in the film but didn't you know that bears really don't hibernate? If they have a good source they'll be active all winter long and even if they don't they still can meander around on warm winter days.
Have a great clip but none way to fit it in this version of Plan J for this film :(
Tim Lewis November 30th, 2015, 03:20 PM Done!
All uploaded and everything. I got it in the can early as the day for filming was the 4th of November. I just finished editing, and although not too happy with it I am safe from shaming.
Bryce Comer November 30th, 2015, 03:38 PM Yay, rendering now, then hope to get it uploaded shortly after.
Can't wait to see all the films. Sounds like there may be quite a few this round.
Bryce Comer November 30th, 2015, 03:53 PM Ok, i don't seem to be able to upload my video. Can anyone help me out on how i log into the DVinfo account? I have the info from Trond, but can't find where to log out of my account, & into the DVinfo one.
Thanks,
Bryce
Edit: Ok, i found where i could log out of my own account & log into the DVInfo one. Uploading now.
Bob Safay November 30th, 2015, 05:21 PM use this

Bryce Comer November 30th, 2015, 06:01 PM Got it sorted thanks Bob. All uploaded!!
Catherine Russell November 30th, 2015, 06:08 PM Hi Bryce:
Here's a screen grab of my personal Vimeo page. If you roll your curser over the face icon (just to the left of the "upload" button) at the top right of the screen it will give you a drop down menu. The log out option is the last option on the list.
This will log you out and takes you to the log in page. Then you can log into the uwol@dvinfo.net site.
Hope this helps...
I found the log out difficult to find, too.
oh -- you beat me to it. glad you're up and running...
Catherine Russell November 30th, 2015, 07:04 PM Hi Bryce:
I think that on the upload you need to make it private with the sign-in password so that Trond can go in and make all the videos public at the same time when he's ready.
cheers!
Bryce Comer November 30th, 2015, 07:08 PM Oops, thanks Cat,
I will PM you now for details on how to do that if you don't mind?
Bryce Comer November 30th, 2015, 07:12 PM Hi Cat, i think i have worked it out. I should have read your last post more closely. I assume i use the password Trond sent me to make the video private right?
Thanks,
Bryce
Catherine Russell November 30th, 2015, 07:42 PM Hi Bryce
You done good! Your video isn't seen on the uwol-dvinfo site, so it's private.
We can give Bob a hard time tomorrow ;-)
Looking forward to everyone's video!
Kevin Railsback November 30th, 2015, 08:58 PM Finished and uploading!
What a journey!
Paul Wood December 1st, 2015, 02:43 AM I was determined to upload something, despite my plan A not working out to well, so I made something based on that, with a few missing shots, between 5 and 10 pm last night, including getting out for a few last shots.
Not brilliant, but Im out of the shark tank!
Trond Saetre December 1st, 2015, 06:30 AM Upload is closed. It's time to reveal the weather. Stay tuned. :)
Catherine Russell December 1st, 2015, 09:57 AM Brilliant! Both Paul and Kevin pulled off a coup and kept out of the shark tank :) And Geir got his in too, despite a bout of the flu...
Yay, the sharks are a bit thin this round.
Nicely done everyone. It's a full venue and I'm ready for the feast the sharks missed this time!
Kevin Railsback December 1st, 2015, 10:14 AM It's exciting to see so many entries this round and even more exciting to some familiar faces that have been gone much too long!
I'll get my feedback thread up once I have access to a computer later today.
Typing on my phone usually means a ton of errors and auto correct errors
Catherine Russell December 1st, 2015, 10:44 AM Thanks Kevin
If feels great being with the crew again.... you can blame Trond for that! :)
Trond Saetre December 1st, 2015, 11:05 AM I'm honored, Catherine! :)
Kevin Railsback January 3rd, 2016, 06:46 AM I made a little tutorial on how I used a color mask to bring down the exposure of the moon in the final shot of my film.
It's not perfect but maybe you'll find it useful someday.
Editing Nature and Wildlife Footage with a Color Mask - Filmmaking Naturally (http://filmmakingnaturally.com/editing-nature-wildlife-footage-color-mask/)
Trond Saetre January 3rd, 2016, 11:44 AM Thanks a lot, Kevin!
For future reference:
If anyone makes tutorials related to the UWOL challenges, we should probably have them in a separate "tutorial thread" so they won't get lost.
Kevin Railsback January 3rd, 2016, 12:07 PM I just threw it in here since it was about a shot from this challenge.
Trond Saetre January 3rd, 2016, 12:10 PM No worries, Kevin :)
