I have OS X 10.9.5 on this iMac.
Co-incidence or not I updated to Safari 9.0 yesterday and since then YouTube will not playback my 4K uploads, it defaults to 720p and won't even give 1080p quality
On my Macbook Retina, not running Safari 9.0 I can still playback in 4K.
Any ideas as to what's gone wrong?

I just tried Safari 9 and was able to select 4K video. Have you tried restarting your Mac?

Still the same after re-start. Defaults to 720p and that's it. YouTube screen or the bottom line looks different as well.
MBP okay.
I have Mavericks, not Yosemite on both machines, but Safari 9.0 only on the iMac where the trouble is.

Google considers it outdated and is not serving you the newer HTML5 player. You need to support Google's VP9 to view 4K now.
In the worst case scenario, try Firefox and (in the very last ditch efforts) Chrome.

One for Gary Huff - what Mac OS are you using? I'm still on Mavericks and wonder if that, coupled with Safari 9.0, is the problem.

Gary, I've installed El Capitan and YT plays 4K okay. I'm generally a believer in "if it ain't broke don't fix it" (from your side of the pond I think) but sometimes no choice.
This after visiting the Apple Store in Liverpool to see what their machines were doing.
