Today, I worked with a producer on a film. We are doing scene by scene editing. On my main box, I could not render out the prior or current edits. Its a Dell 420 XPS. A few years back I added an Nvidea card to the box, as well as additional memory bringing it to 8 gig My hard drive for the edit files and the source files is a USB3 drive. I updated the drivers, and still no dice,.

Interestingly, I took the edit I did to my Del Vostro laptop, which also is running Windows 10, and I was able to render the edit without a problem..

One thing that seems to have improved since running Win10 is GPU compatibility. Under Win7 I would get Vegas freeze and exit when choosing GPU. I have a Geforce 780TI. Now with the Win10 graphics driver and OpenCL Vegas has not had a problem so far. Not much difference in rendering time but smoother time line playback.

Today I did what I never have done, I upgraded and did not do a clean install. I have had random shutdown issues for a few months and just have not had time to do a Windows installation.

This upgrade seems to have fixed my issue.

I have been doing clean installs since Windows 95, wiping the hard drive manually twice or more prior to installation.

Windows 10 is perfect, faster. I believed what I have read about it and I agree, the upgrade works and it is superior to Windows 8.

I had read that auto updates could not be disabled and am delighted that does not seem to be the case, it's just as before. Highly recommend.

Great result Jeff :-)

I'm still enjoying trouble-free times here (although that's probably tempting fate!). The only snag that persists is that often on exit I still get the 'Vegas has stopped working' message. Of course I've saved my work already, but it loses the recently used files list and any other UI changes. Not a big deal but annoying. I had this with Windows 8 as well so it's not a new issue to me since the upgrade.

I have had to go back to Windows 7 on my main box, on which I am running an Nvidia 9800 GT card. My laptop handles Vegasl and Windows 10 perfectly, my main box does not render. I tried doing a clean install of Vegas on Windows 10 in that box, but then, it would freeze at start up. I tried a couple of the fixes recommended for that freeze condition, but I was not successful.

so, having imaged / backed-up my win 7 installation i installed 10.

a. install went as smoothly as it did on my other 4 pc / laptops. (all of which are working very well - much snappier and overall noticeably quicker. (some have a combination of: vegas / ppr / cs6 / cs5.5 / resovle / catalyst / etc on them). no problems with any software (so far).

b. install went as smoothly as above on my main nle pc (as in specs). HOWEVER: cs5.5 progs crashed, cs6 ps wanted to register as did ae, and though vegas fired up, my genarts plugins lost their licence.

c. i played a little and checked that the following worked ok (they did) - intensity pro, catalyst, resolve, sf 10, interestingly enough cs6 ppro and media encoder worked.

frankly i don't have the patience or interest in sorting out licensing or why these problems occurred. suffice to say, if it ain't broke, don't fix it ;-( hence, back to 7.

i still maintain that 10 is an improvement over 7, and would happily install it on any pc NOT running more esoteric software than usually found.

I installed Windows 10 a month ago. No issues existing apps.

I did a recording today and found that Vegas Pro 13 will not start up, no problem with Vegas 12 (good job I kept this otherwise I would be unable to complete my project).

When I try to load Vegas Pro 13 it hangs up at the stage where it says "Creating Windows"

Has anyone tried Vegas Pro 13 under Windows 10?

Yes it's working fine under windows 10 and in addition I can use GPU acceleration without crashing as it did under windows 7.

Also, Karl, what plugins are you using?

If anyone sees a bad dll etc, that could make it easier to hunt down the problem.

Can't see Sony being able to sell Vegas until they fix this problem - probably best I check their site for possible updates.

I have a software company but am not willing to put a tech guy on this as it could easily take a day and cost a bundle.

The strategy is going to have to be to just wait for a solution

Are you saying you aren't using plugins in this project or you have no plugins installed at all?

Also, you didn't mention the video card you're using.

I recall a long while back someone had a similar problem that was caused by having an external drive referenced in the project that was not attached at the time of launching Vegas. That might be worth exploring.

No plug-ins, so far as I can see
That would be a problem. Sony Vegas is like a shell and can do nothing without plug-ins. It comes with a bunch of plug-ins included in the installation, so it is rather unlikely you don’t have any plug-ins.

If you really have no plug-ins, you either need to reinstall Vegas or have a hardware problem that prevents Vegas from loading them (such as a failing hard disk) or your system does not satisfy all the hardware requirements Vegas needs (such as a video card that does not support the level of hardware acceleration the included plug-ins expect).

For example, I currently have an Asus laptop and cannot run Vegas 13 on it, even though all prior versions of Vegas run smoothly. I would need a different video adapter, but since it is a laptop I have no way of putting a different video adapter in it, I just opted not to upgrade to Vegas 13.

Looks like I have AMD Radeon HD 7600 Series

I did the standard install so not sure what add-ins I installed. Where would I go to see the list?

Adam Stanislav

I did the standard install so not sure what add-ins I installed. Where would I go to see the list?

In the Video FX pane, all the effects are listed. All of them are plug-ins. If you scroll down the list, expand where it says Sony, and it will show you all the plug-ins/effects that came with Vegas. And if you expand where it says Third Party, it will list the rest of them.

Similarly, the Transitions pane lists all the transitions, which, too, are plug-ins. And again, you can see which ones are from Sony and which from a third party.

Additionally, you can click on the CC icon at the header of a video track. Then click Custom... and from the pop-up window you will be able to see the list of the composite mode plug-ins.

Thanks..

Unfortunately since I cannot load the app, I never get to see the list of plugins.

I may consider installing Vegas Pro 13 on an old PC running Windows 7 just to see the list of plug-ins.

You will be able to see which plugins are installed by running your earlier version of Vegas. Did you look at the external drive suggestion?

Adam Stanislav

Unfortunately since I cannot load the app, I never get to see the list of plugins.

Well, you can always find the DLLs of all OFX plug-ins used. First of all, most third-party plug-ins will be in various subdirectories of C:\Program Files\Common Files\OFX\Plugins. In most cases each subdirectory will have another subdirectory named Contents, and that one will have a subdirectory named Win64 (for 64-bit plug-ins). Inside that directory shall be a file with the .ofx extension. That is a DLL and contains one or more plug-ins.

Additional plug-ins may be located at directories (with the same subdirectory tree) pointed at by the OFX_PLUGIN_PATH environment variable.

And the Vegas 13.0 specific OFX plug-ins follow the same tree in the C:\Program Files\Sony\Vegas Pro 13.0\OFX Video Plug-Ins directory (or, \PathToVegas\OFX Video Plug-Ins if Vegas is installed somewhere else).

Temporarily moving any of them somewhere else might help determine whether any of them is preventing Vegas from running.

Thanks, again...

I am close to solving the problem.

If I start up my machine and immediately load V13, it loads. If I allow other apps to start up first, then we get to where "Creating Windows" stalls.

If I give V13 a load priority, the problem may disappear,

Inconvenient, yes, because I only use Vegas a few times a week but putting the computer in sleep mode, may solve the problem.

I will provide updates over the next few days.
