Im doing a documentary, I'm following a subject from Hong Kong to Japan.

We will be traveling through the HK airport and Tokyo airport....I wanted to shoot in the terminal and the on the plane. Do I need permits or permission?

Unless you are filming on a phone, you will definitely need permission to shoot in an airport and as a matter of courtesy I would check with cabin crew on any flight..

Please don't say "shooting in an airport".

I flew into the U.S. via Miami International last year, and apart for 3 cameras and various batteries in my backpack, I also had a table top tripod that folds up into an L shape. It went through the security scanner and was put aside while a security person mentioned that there was an odd shaped object in my bag that they were suspicious about. I said that there was a mini tripod that looks a bit gun shaped in silhouette that I use for shooting from table tops. She immediately waved over two burly armed security guys who insisted I completely unpacked the bag while they watched me closely. It ended with laughs and a handshake and they said to never mention the words gun or shooting at an airport, you can never be too careful.

hahaha, the "filming" in the airport actually went alright.

apparently in Hong Kong and Okinawa, no one cares if you're a one man crew with a C300.

I just went with the mentality, film until someone tells you not to. airport authorities didn't mind at all
