I am considering sending my GL2 in over the holidays for service. I am not seeing any issues, but I've had it for almost 2 years now and don't really want something to happen during a wedding or something.

So I was going to send it in for an oilchange and such. According to the fine folks at the Canon website, below is the place they would want me to send it. Anyone ever dealt with these people. I'd hate to be on the 'Horror Stories from Canon' thread.

You'll find lots of notes about the Canon service centers on this board. Living in NJ, that's the one I've used. They've always been very responsive and have done all repairs as promised.

Jim,

I called that particular service center. They advised me that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. I'll chew on that advice for a while before deciding to send it in or not. I take care of the thing, using tapes once, using the same tapes, head cleaner etc. So heck if I know.

Is that true? I was under the impression that over time, things do come out of alignment, etc, and that an annual service plan was advisable. I'm surprised.

I was surprised as well. That's why I called Canon and asked.

Steven -- If the folks at the NJ service center tell you not to send it in, I'd take them at their word. I've delt with them in person, and they seem very professional. The only reason I took my camera in was to fix a small problem I was having with the viewfinder. I've never sent it in for a "regular service," and I'm not aware that Canon recommends doing that. If you ever do have a problem that requires service, they perform a complete check and cleaning as part of the service process. You never get away with paying less than $250, so it's fiscally smart to only send it in when you have to.
