For those interested in the JVC GY-HD100U and its operation with CineForm software, DVCamps (www.dvcamps.com) is having a weekend long event covering the camera in detail and a range of post production solutions (not all CineForm.) In addition to CineForm showing Aspect HD and Prospect HD (and Connect HD if find a Vegas jockey) we will demonstrate the new Wafian Direct-to-Disk HD-SDI Recorder that will capture 60p video from the JVC camera directly into CineForm Intermediate (anyone for bypassing MPEG compressing + awesome slowmotion shoots?) It will be a good event for HDV film-makers in the LA area.

I'm really interested in hearing more details about this direct-to-disk recorder... questions include:

- inputs? (analog component HD in? HD-SDI in?)
- size/weight/power requirements
- estimated cost
- are you considering adapting it to take 1920x1080(i/p) in as well? Such a device would be handy for everyone from an HC1 owner to those who buy the HVX and XLH1.

I imagine we'll have to wait for the full-press/specs release...?

Wafian Direct-to-Disk HD-SDI Recorder aka "SilverOak"
is the same as promised Cineform Ingest Box?

Yes. We are working with Wafian to develop this unit.

Well, I'm extremely interested in this Wafian/Cineform unit. I'll have to see what the requirements are, but if it's anywhere near portable, it could be a gold-mine for HDV owners... removing nearly all codec limitations, doubling the colour sampling, resulting in some extremely impressive video.

I suggest as soon as this product comes out you post some png comparisons between a 4:2:2 Cineform capture from analog out / HD-SDI vs. an HDV sample. I can only imagine how good the current 8-bit HDV vs. Cineform quality test would look if you captured uncompressed from the analog source. Likewise, when the HVX200 comes out, post a similar comparison between Cineform and DVCPRO-HD.

Seriously - 4:2:2 10-bit, square pixel 1280x720p60, and 1920x1080i...? No more pulldowns with progressive encoding? Lens limitations and CCD blocks will be all that's left... and post will be a lot simpler.

I know you can't comment on pricing yet - but if you can place it even close to competitive (i.e., within range of someone considering a Firestone but looking for a bit more)... Cineform would probably become the dominant prosumer HD editing codec in no time.

Okay - maybe there's a little bit of reckless hyperbole there... but hopefully not too much.

Has someone mentioned an approximate time when this might be avialable?

Now that's just for the jvc camera right?

David Newman

No the unit will work at all standard HD resolutions and frame rates. For the JVC we offer the ability to capture 60p or 2.5X overcranked slow motion, something the camera can't do on its own. That is why the JVC camera and the Wafian ingest product are an excellent match. Yet if you have a project using any HD source with analog or HDSDI output this product will increase the image quality of the captured image.

so would the JVC be bypassing the 8bit compression and recording 10bit to the wafian unit via the hdsdi output?

Would this then require Prospect HD to work with the footage?

Will it be able to do 60i or 2x slow-mo with any other cameras?

How do you get information on beta testing?

>>so would the JVC be bypassing the 8bit compression and recording 10bit to the wafian unit via the hdsdi output?

JVC only has analog outputs, which we digitize as 10-bit and encode into CineForm Intermediate.

>>Would this then require Prospect HD to work with the footage?

In 10-bit yes. Our 8-bit applications and codec can also work with the footage, but only to 8-bit precision. We now have Prospect HD Edit, which is designed for user get footage other than through a PC based HDSDI card, this matches with the Ingest product for an inexpensive 10-bit editing solution.

>>Will it be able to do 60i or 2x slow-mo with any other cameras?

60i yes. However the slow motion processing of interlace materials is up to the end user. 60i to 24p slow motion is not too tricky, but it would not be the function of any capture device.

>>How do you get information on beta testing?

Email : prospecthdinfo@cineform.com and ask about Wafian beta program. As there is a lot of hardware involved, this is a purchased beta unit, so we are looking of customers with an upcoming film project that can benefit from the enhanced workflow/quality and get us the feedback we need to bring the product to the general market.

Hi David,

It was nice meeting you at the DVCamps JVC event yesterday.

The Cineform Prospect Demo was excellent -- A real eye-opener. I will definitely be upgrading from Aspect to Prospect soon.

Everyone, the Wafian/Cineform demo was incredible. They recorded a clip at 60p and dropped in into a 24p timeline and the slow-motion looked amazing -- so clear -- just like overcranking a motion picture camera.

David/Cineform team: Thank you for your ongoing quest to deliver products that meet the needs of today's filmmakers.

How i know all Sony HDV camcorders including HC-1 have component out.
Or i mistaken?

David Newman

Yes the Sony cameras have component analog also. So the process of digitizing the analog feed from many HDV cameras will work.

It's possible convert the 1080i signal of an FX1/Z1/HC1 to the 720p24 in real time ?
David, do you have plan to release a low-cost ConnectHD Edition 8bit of Ingest Box? :)

It is possible in the near future realization of CFHD in FPGA or DSP and Cineform DVR similar to this product: http://ctt.ru/products/hd/flash_dvr/ ?
