View Full Version : AX100 Firmware 3.0 is out today!!
Cliff Totten March 12th, 2015, 01:43 PM Wahoo....we get 100 MBp/s today!!
Looks like Sony has improved the auto focus even more too.
System Software Update version 3.00 (Microsoft Windows) : Download : Sony Asia Pacific (http://www.sony-asia.com/support/download/602612/product/fdr-ax100e)
Looks like Sony Pacific Asia is the first to post it. For some reason, they always beat Sony US to the punch.
Enjoy!! Thank you SONY!!!
Wacharapong Chiowanich March 12th, 2015, 05:38 PM Looks like Mac users have to wait.
Noa Put March 12th, 2015, 05:44 PM Do Mac user have no Pc friends? :) Should be easy to find someone in the family with a pc to do a quick upgrade?
Kyle Root March 12th, 2015, 06:55 PM Very cool.
This guy is still on my radar as a potential upgrade path.
Charles W. Hull March 13th, 2015, 10:55 AM Has anyone done this upgrade yet? How did it go? I'm doing video with the AX100 tomorrow and would like to have this, but of course concerned that doing an upgrade just before a shoot can be a bad idea.
Len Imbery March 13th, 2015, 10:59 AM I upgraded...seemed to all work well, but I haven't had a chance to test yet. You have to reset time and date as well as any custom settings you had..... Now I've got to buy some faster chips so it will work at the 100mbs speed...
Mark Watson March 13th, 2015, 11:03 AM Performed the update with no issues. When selecting the 100Mbps mode of 4K, I get a message saying
"Use UHS-I U3 compatible memory card."
My SanDisk Extreme PLUS 80MB/s U1 SDXC card is not compatible. Hopefully some local vendor has what I need so I can check out the upgraded 4K tomorrow.
Mark
Len Imbery March 13th, 2015, 11:33 AM Yes, I bet they cost a whole lot more too!
Noa Put March 13th, 2015, 11:41 AM I"m using Kingston 64gb "sda3" cards with 90mbs read and 80mb write speed, would that one be too slow as well for 100mbs? I don't have any issues on my gh4 which does have a 100mbs bitrate.
Jeff Harper March 13th, 2015, 12:01 PM Thanks Cliff! Autofocus has been SO bad with the AX100. I've very happy that this update is available, will download and install asap.
David Arendt March 13th, 2015, 12:19 PM Did someone using a PAL model already do the update downloaded from this link ? Does it work flawlessly on the PAL model. Is the HDMI port still only enabled during recording of 1080i/p or is it now also enabled while recording 4K ?
Darren Levine March 13th, 2015, 12:29 PM i just got one of these, gh4 recorded through the whole card at 100mbit with no hiccups

Bruce Dempsey March 13th, 2015, 12:40 PM ntsc ax100 version 3
No hdmi output while 4k recording
David Arendt March 13th, 2015, 12:51 PM Is HDMI output still available for 1080i/p recording ?
Noa Put March 13th, 2015, 12:54 PM Just installed it, the only thing I hate is that it also resets everything to factory default so I have to customize the camera again.
Noa Put March 13th, 2015, 12:56 PM Is the HDMI port still only enabled during recording of 1080i/p or is it now also enabled while recording 4K ?
Where do I find that info back in the menu?
David Arendt March 13th, 2015, 01:05 PM In fact this info cannot be found in the menu. The only way to determine this is to connect the camcorder to a televsion and see if there is still an image displayed on it while recording.
Noa Put March 13th, 2015, 01:11 PM Ok, so it's not the "hdmi resolution" in the menu, that one does display from 720p to 2160p as selection? Not sure if I can find my hdmi cable but if I do I"ll try
Jeff Harper March 13th, 2015, 01:12 PM Anyone know how to get rid of the Zoom buttons on the screen that now appear after the update?
They are distracting and I can't find a setting to turn them off.
David Arendt March 13th, 2015, 01:14 PM No, the menu entries are always available. Only a black image is outputted via hdmi during recording 4k on older firmwares.

menu, camera/mic, camera data display -> set to "on"

Just connected the camera to my tv with a hdmi cable and got an image in standby mode, as soon as I pressed record my tv turned black.
Noa Put March 13th, 2015, 01:25 PM oh wait, my camera is set to 4k and the tv is 1080p, I take it I should set the camera to 1080p first?
Jeff Harper March 13th, 2015, 01:26 PM Noa, that setting is on by default. These zoom buttons are driving me crazy. The come on over top of the screen and I can tap the screen to get rid of it. but then they come right back.
Noa Put March 13th, 2015, 01:27 PM Just set the camera to 1080p and connected back to the tv, now I continued having a preview on my tv when the camera was recording...

have you configured your buttons true camera/mic and then mybutton?
Noa Put March 13th, 2015, 01:30 PM Sorry, wrong setting! try setup, display setting and set this to on
David Arendt March 13th, 2015, 01:36 PM As you are from Belgium, I suppose you installed the update on the pal model right ? So is it also perfoming correctly on the PAL model and offering 25/50fps ?
Jeff Harper March 13th, 2015, 01:50 PM Noa, thanks much! That was it!
Noa Put March 13th, 2015, 01:53 PM As you are from Belgium, I suppose you installed the update on the pal model right ? So is it also perfoming correctly on the PAL model and offering 25/50fps ?
Yes, it's a pal model and when viewing the menu I get 25p and 50p options in xavc s hd and 25p in 4K

I updated; it seemed to go well. Already have a U3 card so it records at 100Mbps okay. Focus is better. Zoom seems better. I'll see how it goes tomorrow.
Jeff Harper March 13th, 2015, 02:24 PM As Charles said, it's fine, no issues. Just have to reconfigure your camera. Focus does seem improved, mildly, but I haven't really tested it much yet. Go ahead, just follow the directions, takes about 5 mins or so to run.
If you use autofocus it could only help.
David Arendt March 13th, 2015, 04:02 PM The update completed sucessfully on 2 ax100s pal here. I can record 4k at 100Mbit/s successfully to Sandisk 95MByte/s UHS 3 cards. Sandisk 95MByte/s UHS 1 cards work only at 60mbps.
Lou Bruno March 14th, 2015, 06:21 AM Updated my AC-100 finally. Would not work on my desktop but I used my Sony Vaio laptop and all went well. WOW!,, focus banged right in.......the downconverts from 4K are crisp. Price was right.....FREE.
Jack Zhang March 14th, 2015, 07:25 AM This begs the question, the update set for June for the X70 will now be inferior to the AX100. Sony better allow 100mbps to the X70 or lots of pros will ditch the X70 for 4K use in favor of something like the GH4.
The only benefit to the X70 over the AX100 is 24bit audio and THAT'S IT.
Nate Haustein March 14th, 2015, 07:34 AM Just picked one of these up. It's quite impressive for what it is. Would be nice to have a tad more control over color contrast and sharpness, but footage looks pretty good out of the box.
Wondering if anyone is using the PNY 128GB UHS-1 card with the new 100mbps shooting mode update? Ordered it from Amazon yesterday but it seems like I might need a true UHS-3 card for the highest quality? Otherwise I suppose I could be the Guinnea Pig!
Cliff Totten March 14th, 2015, 09:13 AM UHS-1 cards (no matter how fast they are) will only work in 60 mbp/s.
The camera forces you to use UHS-3 cards for 100mbp/s.
It kinds sucks because UHS-1 cards are clearly fast enough.
Nate Haustein March 14th, 2015, 10:02 AM Bummer. Thanks for the info. Does anyone have any confirmed 128GB cards that will work with the new update? Prefer not to spend $150 on a sandisk. Maybe the UHS-3 Transcend?
Cliff Totten March 14th, 2015, 10:57 AM I'm using Transcend cards and they have always been rock solid.
One got smashed once. I took it apart and saw Samsung labled chips. So, i figured that was a pretty good thing to see.
Peter Siamidis March 15th, 2015, 12:43 AM Just did the update with no troubles. I had ordered this memory card which arrived today (great timing):
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00MCJPSUO/
$70 for a 128gb memory card, pretty good deal and it works great at 100mbps 4K mode with firmware 3.0. Says about 2 hours 49 minutes record time available with this memory card. The 4k 100mbps footage drops right into Vegas Pro 13 and plays just fine as well.
Piotr Wozniacki March 15th, 2015, 02:49 AM Hi guys,
I'm thinking of buying this little camera; have already tested the 50 Mbps XAVC-S clips but would love to check how the 100 Mbps ones behave on my Vegas Pro timeline. Any link to a original, unchanged samples straight from the upgraded AX100, please?
Derek McCabe March 15th, 2015, 05:10 PM FWIW: I updated my Firmware 3.0 on a Mac running VMWare w/Windows 7. No issues.
Nate Haustein March 15th, 2015, 06:39 PM I did mine for OS X as I do not have easy access to a Windows computer. Firmware for all operating systems is now live on the U.S. site.

Andy Smith March 16th, 2015, 09:24 AM Sony UK site finally posted ver 3.0 update today, they were unable to tell me why it had taken so long after the other worldwide sites had already provided the update.
Some users have already posted some comparisons of 60mbps and 100mbps on You-tube.
Noa Put March 16th, 2015, 10:31 AM Why does that matter? the Asia Pacific firmware worked on my camera which was just online 4 days ago :)
Jeff Harper March 16th, 2015, 10:38 AM Yes, Andy, you did not need to wait! The original update at the link posted at the top of this thread was usable and works fine.
Andy Smith March 16th, 2015, 03:09 PM I was not sure whether the AX100E files on Asia, Australia, New Zealand would be identical to what would be release for UK/Europe. Additionally once you upgrade you cannot go back or re-flash the same ver no. (probably). Looks like it is the same firmware/features as the AX33.
Andy
Cliff Totten March 16th, 2015, 04:25 PM Sony's update software usually inspects the camera it is about to update and checks that it meets the proper requirements before it flashes it.
I dont believe its possible to flash the camera with the firmware it wasnt made for.
Andy Smith March 17th, 2015, 12:56 PM Anyone had a chance yet to determine the changes to autofocus, what exactly is supposed to be better? The version 2.0 was very good anyway.
Andy
Wacharapong Chiowanich March 17th, 2015, 10:34 PM I have yet to see any noticeable improvement of the AF. There might have been but to me it's still impossible to tell after 2 days for shooting with the new FW. Even the face detection (tracking) is hard to tell. Overall I found the AF in the previous FW version 2.0 to be good enough.
One thing this FW sure does is make all your UHS-I U1 cards useless in the new 100Mbps 4K mode. It doesn't matter how the actual read/write speeds on your non-U3 cards are, the camera just rejects them. Now, it would take some time to find out if the 40Mbps gain is worth throwing away all the older cards and getting the newer ones.
