My AT 897 has had an unfortunate accident (someone broke in and stole it from storage). So at this point I am in need of a replacement. I know there are some in the 3 to 5 hundred range that are better, but I do not remember their names. I know Sony has the ecm 678, but I am unfamiliar with that model. Any suggestions from those in the know? The short of it is that I will be using this mic for whatever I could properly use my 897 for. Thanks

The Senn ME66/K6 falls in that price range.
Excellent surname you have there, by the way.

Thanks, my ancestors paid a high price for it.
Down to business: From what I heard when I demoed the me66 and the 897, the 897 was acoustically a superior product. What I am hoping for now is the next step up to the 897. I am willing to go up to the $600 range to acquire it.

Hmmmm I got mine on e-bay :)
Well I have been using the ME66 and had great results so I guess it depends on the specifics of your application.

Next step up from an 897 is the AT4073. Try it out - I doubt you'll be disappointed.
