I generally post my work in the XHA1 section and when I owned an XLH1, I would post it here but it's up to you.

I'm still learning about the camera at work. The other day I got to sneak out to the park with it to do some testing while my boss was out sick ;) I used the Panalook preset by my inspiration for this type of video Mr. Dempsey. As you can see the tripod we have is very inadequate (maybe this video will help sway him to get a decent one) as the camera is too heavy for it ,it sways in the wind, and its a $60 cheap-o from Sears anyway. Also included is a short product video I made the week prior, still learning what he wants and such. Enjoy!

You have a $9000 dollar camera mounted on a $60 tripod from sears? Yikes!

When I put mine on my lightweight Manfrotto tripod I get scared! And it's a $200 kit.

I am downloading the clips now.....will comment soon.

Peace!

yikes is right, I never leave it alone on that thing. But theres not much I can do about it, bosses choice. I tried a shot looking at the ground, the weight pulled the release plate right off the tripod :(( I never let go of that handle!

Well I had the opportunity to shoot my mates transam only thing was I had 2 hours!!! there is so much more i wanted/needed to film, but this was a tester to see how the footage would turn out, and indeed how my camera m2 held up to HD and a 25f framerate. My poor imac really does struggle with the simplest of things in HD.

Anyway have a ganders :)

ps. Watch the end, its funny or should that be expensive.!!

It looks nice, shallow DOF helps, shooting cars is a blast, just had a job, doing a video on Freelander2, that was the best job of my life!

Well we have all seen the beautiful landscape shots from these cameras, so I thought I would try an experiment, Use the same footage but colour, grade, and alter the music to give two completley different looks and feel.

Here is my first piece I call 'Dark' I will post 'Light' when i get round to doing some editing :) Hope you like it, all feedback very appreicated, its how we all learn our craft.

cheers.

Hello,

I watched your film and I think you need a hug.

I like the look and composition of most of the video in the piece. There were a few places where I felt the editing was forced and a couple of shots that seemed unnecessarily shaky. Overall, I think you should work out a better story around the poetry for your next feature ("Light" I believe). You have many beautiful shots, but the video needs to go from somewhere to somewhere in order for the editing to gain greater meaning. You could, for example, introduce a character. It doesn't have to be a person (could be nature), but something for you to tell a story around and sequence shots to. You may also want to incorporate more natural sound to help the narrative along when transitioning between the lines of poetry. Just a couple of things I thought of when I watched the video.

Again, the pictures are nice and I always enjoy the idea of using poetry in a story (evil sounding or not). Good luck,

Thanks Cale all comments appreciated. I didnt actually shoot this for this perpous I had the footage and thought what could I do different to the usual, classical music and flowing transitions.

I may actually reshoot with a purpose and try it again.

Thanks again, all comments very appreciated.

Andy.

Andy,

Great concept. I think you can take it much further. I think it would be more powerful with female narration. Something like a "mother nature" figure gone haywire. If you are planning to re-shoot some scenes then maybe a few very blurred shots of the mother nature figure in medevil costume moving thru the scenes.

I will be giving a talk to a local birding group about videotaping birds. I would like to be able to show a side-by-side comparison of two close-up still frames taken of the same subject (preferably a bird) with the same lenses using the XL-2 and XL H1. I do not have access to an XL H1, so cannot do it myself. If anyone has two such frames, and would like to let me use them (acknowledgement given, of course), please contact me off the board at
sv4birds@yahoo.com.

Thanks,

Here it is, my very first REAL video with the H1 at work. I was given the direction to think of a movie genre to make the video more entertaining than just a normal product video. We decided on 'Mobster' movie because of the product name... the Eliminator. I worked with my boss writing the video/ad. I did the story board, casting, directing, lighting, filming, and all the editing. Let me know what you think.

Hello,

I think you did a nice job. It's always good to see creative approaches in advertising. Lighting and a couple of pace issues are the two things I'd like to see tweaked. Darker, hazy, musty, smokey daylight style lighting would help the mob look and feel. As it is, the scenes are too clean, but I guess maybe that aids the focus of the product. Some of the angles from the opening sequence matched too closely (medium to medium). I noticed that you have a great range of tight and medium shots once the product showed up. Overall I liked the approach and the video has a quality feel to it.

Good work,

Alright, I've compressed an H.264 for my website of some quick clips that you guys can check out. It is in the portfolio section, under "Uncompressed Footage."

I will try to get a short couple second clip up for download so you can see the video in full quality.

The clip posted is from a film trailer I shot back last spring. It should give an indication of what the camera is capable of when taking advantage of its capabilities.

Oleg -
That is Beautiful!

(obviously you are not just using the viewfinder to focus:)

Oleg Kalyan
March 3rd, 2008, 04:57 PM
John, Thank You!
To be honest, I only used a stock viewfinder...

I have to admit that when there is less to focus on, like with 100mm macro lens, it's in a way easier to focus, just going between "no focus" points, however if the goal is to pull the focus to a moving object, or a different spot it may become a problem, a HiDef monitor is a must!

By the way, I have been using your "Oleg Warm" preset for two years. It is my favorite preset for warm, saturated tones.

Thanks for sharing.

A low budget commercial

Low budget but not low quality :) I thought it was great, very creative, nice color. Did you use a adapter to get the small DOF or did you zoom in? Thought that low shot when those guys came in the door was great, also the one were they were leaning against eachother and moved sideways to expose the light spot.

Did you use a lot of extra light to film this? How many people were involved shooting this?

Oleg Kalyan
May 16th, 2008, 04:07 PM
Patrick and Noa, I really appreciate your comments!

I had two sources of light, one was HMI 5600K joker bug 800 wt, another Fosqi, similar to Kinoflo, (it's in the shot) you can see it breefly, I used mini35mm adapter, I had an assistant and 1 grip guy, so three of us did it all.
It took I'd say 4 hours to get all the shots done, I have not seen the place before the shoot, so it took some trial and error to move the lights around and get best exposure, still I think lighting could've been better, but the client is really happy it turned out, it
actually was transferred to 35 mm film to show it in local cinema! I look forward to watch it in the theater!

I have a trailer to a short film I shot with the XLH1, that I am working on at
http://www.youtube.com/profile?user=HeirBorneProductions. ("Seventeen Golden Summers") I edited with Final Cut Pro and Color.

...I also have another clip there that I did the day I got my canon, called "Jackie and Jake". (Big difference since I didn't know what I was doing yet!)

Lovely shots, as we have come to expect from you! I think you could actually have done with more DOF in the close ups - there's quite a lot of footage that just looks out of focus to me. I know that's the point of the 35mm optics and it works well in the mid shots, but the DOF is so narrow in the close ups that I would say it's a problem in places.

By the way, this is a double post and you are very naughty (wags finger).

Oleg Kalyan
July 1st, 2008, 12:07 AM
Colin, thank you.

I have done the shots with lowest possible DOF on purpose, also consider that everything was shot with available light, in some shots I could close down F/T stop,
the idea was if something significant in focus it's good, to isolate what can be seen in shot to make it more significant.

"By the way, this is a double post and you are very naughty (wags finger)" ???

Do you mean that I also post it in show work thread?

It just seems to me that towards the beginning there are a few moments when NONE of the frame is in focus. For instance, the fourth shot (the baby from over the shoulder of his mother at 00:13:00). Maybe it's deliberate and I am missing the point? I could understand an overall soft focus effect being appropriate to this content but I am having difficulty with only the ends of toes and very small sections of faces being featured :-)

Sorry to be so negative here - I am a great fan of your work as you know.

Oleg Kalyan

Colin, thanks again,
I see what you mean, yes I am aware that for a moment during transition complete shot may be out of focus, that's the idea, instead of using soft FX transition, I used original footage for that purpose.

Didn't know that not allowed to cross post, will delete, or moderator please do so in show my work section.

Nice work. Did you shoot and edit this as well? What really stands out to me in this piece is not just the footage, but the audio and spot on editing. It has a very nice story telling flow to it, capped off with a compelling call-to-action.

I liked it this one a lot.
