3D is about to hit pretty strong- Atmos for theater and Auro3D for music. There are some truly stunning recordings being made in Auro3D right now. Was one of the hits of AES.

'Scuse me for asking, but isn't stereo already 3D audio?
Properly recorded and listened to on a decent system in a good environment it gives width, depth and height information. That's 3D ain't it?
Anyone who has listened to "dummy head" recorded audio on headphones will tell you it's creepy, with sounds coming from everywhere around you. Solid 3d and years old!

I recall 25 years ago Q sound being the next big thing, any delivery format is dependent on the consumer uptake but more importantly the budgets to produce it in the first instance.

There's no disputing that true binaural is amazingly realistic. But that doesn't work very well for a group of people listening to loudspeakers in a living room, or for a few hundred people listening to loudspeakers in a movie theatre. Especially in the latter case, you need to use some trickery to make it sound realistic to anybody seated anywhere in the theatre.

Heck, surround doesn't even come close to what formats like Auro3D can do. Not even completely dependent on having a perfectly set up system. Never really understood what height information could translate to, but it is nothing short of amazing. Hearing is believing.
This is one of the recording that was being demo'd a lot. It's impressive in stereo and even better in Surround, but the Auro presentation was jaw-droppingly good.
