Are there currently any cameras (in the pipeline) that record onto D5?
Are 720p and 1080p resolutions on D5 true 1280x720 and 1920x1080?
Also, what's that datarate/bitrate of D5 as opposed to HDCAM?
Will D5 become the standard high-end HD mastering format?
Thanks,
Roy

Haven't heard of any d5 cameras only a vtr
Resoultions are true 1080i, 1080p, 1080PsF, 720p @ 24, 25, 30 fps (or 60i) and 60p for 720p.
D5 is intraframe (4:1) compress 4:2:2 @ 250 megabits/s and includes 4 40khz 20bit uncompressed audio embedded in that. (but i keep seeing things saying it is uncompressed, but i'm almost sure it isn't)
D5 has been around a while but hasn't caught on, looks like an awesome format except for cost (100k for a vtr, yikes!) - get this, introduced 1994.

I believe many HDTV MPEG2 movies are encoded from D5 masters..

The only camera under $60K that can record to D5 via HDSDI
_will_ be the Canon HD1 which has a HDSDI port on it. The only
problem is that the HD1 does NOT do 720P@10bit, only 1080i.
The D5 can record 720P at 10 bit.
The D5 is the flagship Panasonic VTR, but as has been pointed out,
the $99,000.00 price tag and costly tape stock keeps it out of reach
of all but the networks and super high end production facilities.

Here you might be a little misinformed. There isn't a major studio in all of Los Angeles that does not have at least 1 D5HD machine. It is also very popular in NYC.
Many additional functions have been developed since 1994 for the D5HD. In 1994 it too did not do 24P or even 720P. It only did 1080i.

I just meant that its not something available to everyone easily. For instance, their isn't a D5 deck in my whole province and I'd be willing to bet that their are some states that don't have access to a D5 except for renting out of state. So in these regards it hasn't caught on. (But HD is still on a slow uptake, very slow in canada)
The VTR seems definitly to have evolved with the times, I just think its a good format that most people would love to use, but just can't because of high cost even over HDCAM.
