View Full Version : Just un-boxed, dead pixels?

Hey all. Just unboxed a shiny new C100.

Everything looks fine in-camera, but I noticed when I hook up to my 52" HD monitor using HDMI I see a blue spot near the middle and a white spot near the bottom. I confirmed that it was there when I put the lens cap on as well.

The spots don't show up on my computer. The spots aren't in the footage when I play it back on my computer.

The spots *are* there when I play back the footage through the HDMI on my TV.

Do I need to take the camera back?

Apologies if I'm stating the obvious here, but have you checked that it's not the TV that has the dead pixels?

Also, maybe a long shot, but have you tried a different HDMI cable?

Definitely not the TV.

I have done further research, and people have said that the pixels are a common occurrence and can be eliminated with black balancing. Not sure if I like the idea of it being a common occurrence for this kind of money, but we'll see.

Been there, done that when I first got my C100 back in late 2012. ABB (Auto Black Balance) often. Of course there is the possibility that you have a faulty sensor but if you see some twinkling pixels in different parts of the screen each time (when running at a very high ISO and with the lens cap on) then that's most likely totally normal. The ABB process will remap the sensor and reduce those that might show (as far as possible).

ABB often - really often. Then, under normal shooting conditions (and even reasonably high ISO ones), once you've learnt it's strengths, the C100 can produce some stunning results. Enjoy it!
