Does anyone know a solution to power it from a dummy battery from a 12V DC battery? Cliff Totten September 23rd, 2014, 07:28 PM I got this one: Amazon.com : AC Power Supply Adapter For Sony AC-PW20 Sony Alpha NEX-5 NEX-5A NEX-5C NEX-5CA NEX-5CD NEX-5H NEX-5K NEX-3 NEX-3A NEX-3C NEX-3CA NEX-3CD NEX-3D NEX-3K SLT-A33 SLT-A33L SLT-A55 SLT-A55V SLT-A55VL : Camera Power Adapters : Camera & Photo (http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-AC-PW20-SLT-A33L-SLT-A55V-SLT-A55VL/dp/B0083EQS3I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1411521988&sr=8-2&keywords=Sony+a7+power+supply) The only odd thing is that it will power the A7s for about 3 hours straight. (about a little longer than 3) The A7s will somehow "think" the "battery" is dying after 3 hours and warn you that the battery is low. Turning the A7s off than on again will reset the 3 hour clock. Not sure why this happens. My RX10 does this too. So,..if 3+ hour recordings are OK with you, this will work. Cees van Kempen September 24th, 2014, 06:59 AM Hmm, strange this 3 hour thing. I also think this power adapter is for mains AC only? I intend to power my camera stand-alone in the field from a large 12V battery, connected to a motion sensor. It should be running for one or two days, so 3 hours is too limited for me. Hope I can do this with the a7s. Matt Sharp September 25th, 2014, 02:29 PM If you're using something like a bank of car batteries you can just run an inverter and plug in the AC adapter. If it were me I'd get get a gold mount battery and hook one of these (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/1069050-REG/wooden_camera_wc_181300_gold_mount_plate_for_sony.html/BI/19641/KBID/12197/kw/WOWC181300/DFF/d10-v2-t1-xWOWC181300) to it. But the largest 205Wh battery only a bit more than 13x as much power. If you're doing video that's about 16:45 hours but it would probably suffice if you're only triggering photos. Andrew Gough September 25th, 2014, 07:10 PM I have powered the A7s using the Sony AC mains adapter and a Paul Buff Vagabond Battery pack. I shot an entire day of time-lapse sequences, and it showed full power the entire time. I shot the A7s in silent mode. Andrew Leon Kolenda October 22nd, 2014, 04:02 PM I got this one: Amazon.com : AC Power Supply Adapter For Sony AC-PW20 Sony Alpha NEX-5 NEX-5A NEX-5C NEX-5CA NEX-5CD NEX-5H NEX-5K NEX-3 NEX-3A NEX-3C NEX-3CA NEX-3CD NEX-3D NEX-3K SLT-A33 SLT-A33L SLT-A55 SLT-A55V SLT-A55VL : Camera Power Adapters : Camera & Photo (http://www.amazon.com/Adapter-AC-PW20-SLT-A33L-SLT-A55V-SLT-A55VL/dp/B0083EQS3I/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1411521988&sr=8-2&keywords=Sony+a7+power+supply) The only odd thing is that it will power the A7s for about 3 hours straight. Hey Cliff, Not trying to steal this thread here, But I want to use my RX10 with an AC adapter and record out of the HDMI port to a Ninja-2 for longer than 29 minutes, It seems you may have that working? Any overheat problems using a AC Adapter for 3-hours? I want to use my RX-10 to shoot some events. Cliff Totten October 22nd, 2014, 09:31 PM Nope,...the RX10 ran like a champ. It was just the same as the A7s..about 3 hours before it forced you to power down and back up again. It's funny, even though they both are running off AC, the Battery meters on the cameras slowly "drain" down when shooting. After about 3 hours, the meters read less that 20% even though the AC dummy battery is plug is feeding normal constant power to the camera. FW50 V adapter [FW50 V 7.2] - $69.00 : Dolgin Engineering, Camera Power Products (http://dolgin.net/zen_dolgin/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=21&products_id=170) The FW50 V adapter accepts one of the high capacity batteries, and powers the camera using a DC coupler (dummy battery) which is included. We are looking for Beta testers located in US. PM if interested. Once this is released, we will have another kit consisting of a 12V to 7.2V step down converter and a DC coupler. Cheers. My email is sharpmatt8 at gmail.com Oren Arieli November 6th, 2014, 01:43 PM I use this battery along with a dummy plug in for my Panasonic G6, and a motorized slider. It also works for the Zoom H5n and any mini USB powered device. Best bang for the buck! http://www.amazon.com/20000mAh-Aluminum-Portable-Multi-Voltage-Technology/dp/B005NGLTZQ/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1415303112&sr=8-2&keywords=anker+12v+usb+charger Alex Dolgin January 31st, 2015, 07:08 AM Alex I'm definitely interested! My email is sharpmatt8 at gmail.com Just to let everybody know that we are not looking for beta testers anymore; we have received a good amount of positive feedback by now - the adapter is available for ordering. Thank you all! Ryan Douthit January 31st, 2015, 10:56 AM Thanks Alex, Do you know if we can use one battery to power both the A7 as well as an Odyssey 7Q+? I see the second connector option, just curious how I'd wire that -- if I can. (I prefer to not solder myself) Also, which parts do I need specifically to connect this to a cheeseplate and get it all running. It looks as though the dummy battery may be a separate item? Or is that part of the "kit" from this page: Power Plate EX-14.4-A7 [EX-14.4-7.2 A7] - $139.00 : Dolgin Engineering, Camera Power Products (http://dolgin.net/zen_dolgin/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=21&products_id=173) Lastly, what's the benefit of a Westside V-Lock vs. Traditional V-Lock? Do I need to "add bracket" for a system? There are a lot of options, without ample description. Alex Dolgin January 31st, 2015, 11:14 AM Ryan, it should work just fine. I do not have access to the pieces that you use, so can not tell you that I actually tested the configuration. The CD uses their proprietary power cable, I unfortunately do not have it here. You might want to give Olof from Westside AV a call, as he uses them and gets them directly from CD. We can install either a standard 2.1mm plug or give you a pigtail (unterminated wire). The A7 DC coupler is included in the kit that we supply. It has a built in chip to talk to the camera to make sure it does not reject power. As far as mounting, your best bet is to order the optional Westside AV V-bracket that Olof makes for us. You do not have to have it as our plate has 4 mounting holes in the back, you could just drill 4 matching holes in your cheese plate for them. Regards Peter Rush February 5th, 2015, 05:40 AM I'm not sure if this answers the question or not, but this may help: Sony A7s (http://www.switronix.com/products?page=shop.browse&category_id=57) Absolutely outrageous price for a camera PSU - £237!!!! - It's also a 6 X capacity battery so I suppose that justifies the high price tag Anyone recommend something I can get in the UK that works for them? I can live with the 3 hour limit as long as I can restart and get another 3 hours Pete Charles Papert February 5th, 2015, 11:29 AM I was linking to the P-tap cable, they've added those battery solutions to the page since. I myself use Anton Bauer Dionics which are priced similarly, I suppose "outrageous" is all relative. Jacques Mersereau April 18th, 2015, 03:57 PM Woodencamera.com also makes various accessories and battery adapters for A7s. And they won't be cheap ;-) They are well made from what I saw at NAB. Roger Martin June 23rd, 2015, 08:54 PM I got this for a little over $20 Amazon.com : BestDealUSA AC Power Supply Adapter For Sony AC-PW20 7.6V 2A : Camera & Photo (http://www.amazon.com/BestDealUSA-Power-Supply-Adapter-AC-PW20/dp/B0089H1FQ4/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1435084054&sr=8-2&keywords=Neewer+40021003) The Small Rig Sony NP970 battery plate plugs right into the dummy battery cable and will give me more than 3 hours. The A7s will only record 29 minutes internally and no 4k. So I got an Odyssey 7Q+. So far I have not needed much more than 3 hours continuous recording, but The 7Q+ is also a battery hog and that same NP970 battery will not last 3 hours, so I got a dummy battery for the 7Q+ and plugged it into a 32,000 mAh Poweradd. With power to spare, I am sure it will last for days hooked only to the A7s doing a sequence of stills. I ordered a 2.1mm DC cable splitter to see if it will run the Camera and Recorder at the same time. Albrecht Ziburski June 26th, 2015, 05:45 AM My plan is to power the A7S with the video devices pix-e recorder which can hold two two of these. S-8972 DV Battery for Sony NP-F970/770 (http://swit.us/s8972-dv-liion-bat8972.html) They have an extra 7.2 V DC out to be connected to a second device which will be the A7s via a battery dummy. And the pix-e will switch from one to the other battery when needed. Will that work? If yes, it may be as good as the atomos powerstation. Peter Rush September 6th, 2015, 03:18 PM I'm interested in this guy's solution - he uses an xtpower battery but this outputs 9v - will the a7s run off a dummy battery supplied with 9v? even though the actual batteries are 7.2v? https://youtu.be/ih19qTQd1qw Roger Martin September 6th, 2015, 07:44 PM I'm interested in this guy's solution - he uses an xtpower battery but this outputs 9v - will the a7s run off a dummy battery supplied with 9v? even though the actual batteries are 7.2v? I am not sure what the upper limit is that the A7s can handle. It certainly handles 8.4 volts well. This is typically what my Sony NP batteries show at full charge. I just started using the new (BestBatt.com) NP-F990 with great results. The 7.2 volt battery is taller and weighs close to one pound but actually delivers way over the 3 hours of recording I need. It is (I think correctly) rated at 10400mAh and 74.9Wh. Michael Bradshaw October 26th, 2015, 08:02 PM The A7s takes 9v with no problem. I bought one of the dummy batteries and power it from an Anker Astro Pro Powerbank. I have the newer version with doesn't have the 19v option but the old model does, 5v on USB, 9v/12v or 19v on a dc jack. I just made a cable with the correct connector and running the A7s for 90min uses about 15% of the battery according to the display on the anker. I must admit having all those voltages from a 20000mAh battery for less than $80/ £50 is incredibly useful. I can use it for ipads or anything that needs usb or power my smallhd monitors etc. Anker 2nd Gen Astro Pro2 20000mAh Multi-Voltage 4-Port: Amazon.co.uk: Electronics (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Anker-20000mAh-Multi-Voltage-Portable-Technology/dp/B00GSLRKJO/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1445912141&sr=8-2&keywords=anker+astro+pro) Roger Martin October 27th, 2015, 07:26 AM If you are worried about using a 12 volt battery on your A series camera, you can get a regulated dummy battery and connect that to an external power source. |
